Marcelo Mayer drove in three of the Worcester Red Sox’ runs in their 7-0 win over the Rochester Red Wings on Sunday afternoon.
The Boston Red Sox top prospect went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
Mayer’s RBI-single in top of third gave the WooSox a 1-0 lead before he added two more runs in the top of the sixth with a two-run.
The WooSox broke the game open in the sixth. After Mayer put Worcester up by three with a two-run home run, Abraham Toro singled, Nathan Hickey drew a walk and Phillip Sikes was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Mark Kolozsvary.
The catcher then hit a grand slam to left field to put the WooSox up 7-0.
Mayer’s performance on Sunday was just the latest in his recent hot stretch. Despite Saturday’s 12-3 loss, Mayer went 2-for-4 with a two-run double, a walk and a strikeout.
The shortstop now has hits in five of his last six games with two homers and 13 RBI.
The pitching was also strong for the WooSox. Shane Drohan threw four scoreless innings and gave up three hits, allowed one walk and stuck out five batters. Jose Adames gave up a hit in two scoreless innings.
Isaiah Campbell pitched two scoreless innings of his own before Nick Burdi closed things out en route to the win.
The WooSox return home Tuesday after an off day on Monday and host a six-game homestand against the Syracuse Mets.
