When Mike Lowell played for the Boston Red Sox from 2006 to 2010, the club was at the peak of its powers. Led by Larry Lucchino and Theo Epstein, the Red Sox were a juggernaut and a perennial championship contender, winning it all in 2007 with Lowell taking home World Series MVP honors.
Lowell has since retired and now works as an analyst for MLB Network. However, he's noticed a clear change in how Boston operates nowadays.
During his appearance on Tuesday's episode of "Baseball Isn't Boring," the All-Star third baseman reflected on the state of his former team.
"I think the Red Sox, in my perspective, are a real big market that wants to run it like the Rays, who get the best bang for their buck," Lowell said. "Why do you have to be that? Why do you strive to be that?"
Lowell's referring to the Red Sox's increased reliance on analytics over the last few years under Chaim Bloom and Craig Breslow, which apparently Epstein isn't onboard with. Bloom worked in the Rays front office before joining Boston, which supports Lowell's point about the Red Sox trying to emulate the Rays' data-driven approach.
Unfortunately for Boston, that strategy hasn't worked as well for them as it does for Tampa Bay. Since winning their last championship in 2018, the Red Sox have just two playoff appearances and three last-place finishes.
Boston's old approach worked, but the new one doesn't. Maybe it's time to go back to the way things were.
