BOSTON — Red Sox infielder Romy Gonzalez went 1 for 2 with a two-run home run and walk in his first rehab game Tuesday for Double-A Portland.
He also played seven innings at second base.
Gonzalez has been on the injured list all season after he underwent an arthroscopic debridement procedure in his left, non-throwing shoulder in March.
The Red Sox have missed his production from the right side of the plate. The 29-year-old was a lefty masher in 2025, batting .331 with a .378 on-base percentage, .600 slugging percentage, .978 OPS, seven home runs, 10 doubles and two triples in 143 plate appearances against southpaws.
“He’s a powerful bat that can drive the ball out of the ballpark to all fields,” interim manager Chad Tracy said.
It’s unclear how long Gonzalez will need on his rehab assignment but he likely will not need a full spring training worth of at-bats.
After all, he began taking batting practice off the Trajekt pitching machine toward the end of last week. The Trajekt machine has helped many rehabbing players shorten their minor league rehab assignments because it is close to real game reps. It simulates any major league pitcher’s windup and repertoire.
“I don’t think it’s going to be like 50 (at-bats),” interim manager Chad Tracy said. “We have a plan laid out for him to play a couple, take a day, play a couple more. And then we’re going to kind of assess him again like the end of next week and see where he’s at, see how he feels.
“So I don’t think it’s a massive number (of at-bats),” Tracy added. “But it is also going to be based on ... communicating with him. How do you feel. How does your body feel? How does the swing feel? How’s the timing feel?”
Gonzalez is scheduled to serve as the DH on Wednesday and then be off Thursday. If all goes well, he likely will play Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“That’s at least what we have laid out for now,” Tracy said. “All of that can change based on how his body’s feeling. But that basically gives him like five or six games over the course of the next eight days or so. And then a couple DH’s where you can rack up more at-bats. And then we’ll kind of see again how he’s feeling each day and how he’s feeling after however many at-bats he’s accrued in that time.”

Tracy said Gonzalez will mostly play second base on his rehab but also will get some reps at first base.
“He’s had experience doing that before,” Tracy said. “I think just checking that box to make sure he gets some work there and feels good about that in case we need him there. He’d probably be one of our more experienced guys as far as having played that position if we need to give Willson (Contreras) a break or even DH day.”
