BOSTON — The Adley Rutschman countdown is officially on.
Rutschman, who was obtained by the Red Sox earlier in the week in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline, will begin a rehab assignment Saturday afternoon in Worcester.
Rutschman, who has been on the injured list since July 20 with left wrist inflammation, will catch five innings for the WooSox and get “two or three” at-bats, according to interim manager Chad Tracy.
Since before the trade, Rutschman has been moving through a hitting progression to test the wrist, while also participating in defensive drills.
Asked if it’s possible for Rutschman to join the Red Sox on a seven-game road trip that begins Monday in Toronto, Tracy sounded circumspect.
“I have no idea,” he said. “Being that it’s five innings right now, maybe not. But we’ll talk through it. It’s his first game back and he’s catching (just) five innings, so I’m sure they’re going to want to build him up a little bit. I’m not going to put the cart before the horse. Let’s just see him get through that one.”
With Rutschman sidelined, the Red Sox have Connor Wong and veteran Jake Rogers handling the catching duties for now. Rogers, who came with Rutschman in the deal with the Orioles, got his first start for the Sox Friday and contributed two doubles and a walk while scoring three times.
