Red Sox Insider Reveals Potential Role For Pitching Prospect After Shocking Call-Up originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox made a shocking roster move following Tuesday's loss to the New York Yankees, calling up pitching prospect Eduardo Rivera from Triple-A and optioning Jack Anderson to Worcester.
The move was shocking because Rivera had just been promoted from Double-A to Triple-A earlier that day. The Red Sox didn't even wait to see him pitch for Worcester before bringing him up.
Such is the state of Boston's pitching staff these days, which has been depleted by recent injuries to Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, Kutter Crawford and others.
On Wednesday, MassLive's Chris Cotillo revealed Rivera's potential role for the Red Sox.

"He last threw Thursday in Altoona, striking out nine in a 5 ⅔-inning start, and the Red Sox planned to bring him out of the bullpen in Worcester," Cotillo wrote. "At this point, it appears he’ll be a long man in the bullpen as the Red Sox re-shuffle their staff in the coming days."
The 22-year-old lefty dominated in two starts for Double-A Portland to start the season, allowing just one earned run in 10 innings while racking up 16 strikeouts.
If he debuts, he'll already become the fifth Boston pitcher to make his Major League debut this season. The mounting injuries have contributed to the club's 9–14 record, forcing the Red Sox to scramble for injury replacements early in the season.
