The MLB trade deadline is still two months away, and it's shaping up to be a big one for the Boston Red Sox.
They enter play on Thursday last in the AL East and eight games below .500, so they'll likely need some help at the deadline if they want to make the playoffs. Recent reports say the Red Sox are looking to add, specifically a right-handed bat to bolster their lineup.
Realistically, however, selling might be a more viable path if the team continues to struggle over the next two months.
Accordingly, ESPN's Jeff Passan thinks Boston should focus on selling rather than buying.
"The Red Sox want to believe they can claw their way back into contention, and in the AL, anything is possible. But the hole they've dug themselves, combined with the lack of high-end relief pitching available at the deadline, puts Boston in the driver's seat to control that segment of the trade market," Passan wrote on Thursday.
Passan thinks the Red Sox should consider trading some of their relievers, as bullpen arms are always prized commodities at the deadline and tend to fetch good returns. With its elite pitching and defense, Boston certainly has some arms to spare.
It's still too early for the Red Sox to commit to buying or selling, especially with how compressed the American League standings are. However, trading away some talent could be a smart move for them if they aren't a serious playoff contender by late July.
