Mets' injured 2.39 ERA All-Star gets Brewers trade update from ESPN's Jeff Passan originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New York Mets are preparing for the trade deadline, but not in the ways fans had hoped.

Instead, president of baseball operations David Stearns is tasked with acquiring prospects for Major Leaguers with expiring contracts.

One Mets starting pitcher who could be switching teams in the next three weeks is right-hander Clay Holmes.

Holmes, who is on the 60-day IL with a fractured right fibula, is a free agent at the end of the season. ESPN's Jeff Passan tabbed the two-time All-Star as the best trade match for the Milwaukee Brewers.

"If so, Holmes, returning from a broken right leg, would be more than they did last deadline, when their acquisitions were a reliever who threw 9.2 innings before getting hurt, a backup catcher and a reserve outfielder," wrote Passan.

While Holmes will not be the top starter available on the trade market, he's a solid fallback option if the Brewers fail to land Tarik Skubal, Joe Ryan, or maybe even Reid Detmers.

In nine starts before his injury, Holmes was pitching like an ace. He posted a 2.39 ERA and allowed just three home runs in 52.2 innings.

Holmes is expected to return this season, and the Brewers would have him in their rotation for at least parts of August and September.

Adding an arm like his could, hopefully, steal Milwaukee an extra game or two in the postseason.

That could be the difference between losing in the NLDS or advancing to the World Series.
