With Opening Day only two weeks away, the Boston Red Sox probably aren't making any major changes to their roster until the season starts.

That includes trading for Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes, who's been one of their top trade targets all offseason.

The two clubs reportedly haven't been in recent contact about Paredes, however, and that appears unlikely to change given Jeremy Pena's injury.

Pena suffered a finger fracture last week, putting his status for Opening Day in jeopardy. That also throws a wrench into the Astros' infield plans, making them less likely to deal Paredes, given his ability to play multiple positions.

"The Red Sox had stuck around as a trade partner option for the Houston Astros as they sought to deal infielder Isaac Paredes," Jen McCaffrey wrote for The Athletic on Monday (subscription required). "Since then, Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena suffered a fractured finger, making it much less likely the Astros trade Paredes and, in turn, solidifying things for the Red Sox."

That's good news for Marcelo Mayer and Caleb Durbin, both of whom are trending towards being Opening Day starters for Boston.

The Red Sox could always revisit a trade for Paredes later this season or next winter, as he's under team control through 2027. However, it looks like the two-time All-Star will stay put for the time being.
