TORONTO — As expected, the Red Sox activated catcher Adley Rutschman off the injured list Tuesday ahead of his team debut at Rogers Centre. To clear room for Rutschman, the club parted ways with a fellow newcomer who had performed well in a small sample with the club.
Boston designated veteran catcher Jake Rogers for assignment, the club announced, ending Rogers’ weeklong tenure with the club, at least for now. The Red Sox hope to retain Rogers, sources said, but he will go on waivers in the coming days. He can’t be optioned to Triple-A without being offered to other teams via the waiver process. It’s past the trade deadline, so the Red Sox can’t trade him, either.
Rogers, a longtime Tiger who was traded to Baltimore on July 30, was acquired alongside Rutschman last Monday as a fill-in option while Rutschman recovered from his wrist injury. Rogers made two starts with the Red Sox and totaled nine plate appearances. He was 3-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs, two walks and two strikeouts while catching 22 innings. In 40 games with three different teams this year, Rogers has hit .183 with three homers, 11 RBIs and a .617 OPS. He’s making $3.05 million as an arbitration-eligible player.
With Rogers off the roster, Connor Wong will assume the backup role behind Rutschman, who is expected to be eased into the mix in the coming days. Wong has started 14 of the last 20 games for Boston and has hit .247 with three homers, 19 RBIs and a .700 OPS in 60 appearances so far. In August, he’s 3-for-20 (.150) with five strikeouts.
Wong is expected to catch Payton Tolle in Thursday’s series finale against the Blue Jays after Rutschman plays back-to-back days catching Patrick Sandoval (Tuesday) and Ranger Suarez (Wednesday).
“Probably, you’re looking at a two in a row-type thing with a day (off), for a period of time here,” interim manager Chad Tracy said before the game.
Before being traded as part of the return for Rutschman, Carlos Narváez led the Red Sox with 56 starts at catcher. Wong has started 48 games with Mickey Gasper (12) and Rogers (two) each getting some action as well so far this year.
The Red Sox also cleared a second 40-man roster move by transferring injured infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the 60-day IL. That’s largely a paper move, but it means Kiner-Falefa can’t be activated before next Tuesday (August 18). He has not started a rehab assignment yet and is therefore unlikely to meet that date anyway as he recovers from a stress reaction in his forearm.
Boston now has two open 40-man roster spots (and nine players on the 60-day IL).
