Red Sox Brayan Bello's First Inning Woes Returned In Latest Triple-A Start originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox demoted Brayan Bello to Triple-A after he failed to find success as a starter in the big leagues this year. He pitched well when he was the bulk pitcher behind an opener.
While Bello was pitching well behind an opener, Chad Tracy said that he needs to start for the Red Sox to succeed. He had a 10.35 ERA in 35 2/3 innings as a starter, compared to a 0.71 ERA in 25 1/3 relief innings. He had a 16.88 ERA in the first inning in the big leagues this season.
In his first start in Triple-A, Bello threw a perfect first inning, which was a very encouraging sign. However, in his second start, he ran into early trouble once again.
Bello gave up a leadoff single. That baserunner stole second base and then Bello hit a batter. He then gave up a two-run double. He issued a walk before getting out of the inning, but it showed that the first inning is still a problem for Bello. The positive note is that he was solid after that.

He retired 10 of the next 11 he faced. He allowed one run in the fifth inning, and there were certainly some positives to take away. However, the first-inning woes are still concerning. He had the best year of his career last year, so the Red Sox came into the season expecting big things from him.
Instead, he finds himself in Triple-A, looking for a way back into the big league rotation.
