Unfortunately for Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello, his starts have generated headlines all season.
Regardless of where you fall in the argument over using an opener, one fact remains: Brayan Bello now has the worst ERA in baseball.
Interim manager Chad Tracy elected not to use an opener in Thursday afternoon's midday start against the Baltimore Orioles.
Less than 24 hours after rookie pitcher Payton Tolle spun six scoreless innings against the Orioles lineup in an 8-1 win, the Red Sox lost the third and final game of the series 8-2.
Bello's first pitch of the game was put into the right-center field gap by Taylor Ward. He hit the next batter before Adley Rutschman, batting cleanup, drove in the first run of the game with a single to center.
A double play set the Red Sox up to get out of the inning with minimal damage. But Bello walked the next batter, beginning a string of seven straight batters reaching base safely.
When it was all said and done, Bello allowed six runs in the first inning.
He threw three scoreless frames after, but was touched up again in the fifth, bringing his final stat line to eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings pitched.
Bello's season ERA jumped to 6.34, good for dead last among 72 qualified starting pitchers in the MLB.
Among those same 72 pitchers, Bello has thrown the least amount of innings, allowed the most earned runs on the third-most hits, and has the second-fewest strikeouts.
His season continues to be among the most bizarre in recent memory for a Red Sox pitcher. Just in May alone, he has two shutout starts, two starts in which he allowed just one run, and two starts in which he gave up more than seven.
Some days Bello is the Cy Young; other days, he is far from it.
