Boston Red Sox star Roman Anthony took a big step forward in his recovery from the injured list.

The Red Sox recently placed Anthony on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 5, with a right wrist sprain. The 22-year-old outfielder played catch for the first time on Friday since spraining his wrist, and was visibly not wearing a brace.

Playing catch is a positive step in Anthony's recovery process, and he could take another big step forward soon, as interim manager Chad Tracy revealed the young outfielder could start a hitting progression as early as this weekend, per The Boston Globe's Tim Healey.

As Anthony continues to strive toward a return to the field, the star outfielder opened up about how he felt after throwing for the first time since his wrist injury.

“I’m out of the brace and got to do baseball activity today,” Anthony said on Friday, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. “So, positive signs. I’m feeling good. Based on the way I felt throwing today, hoping to get into that (swinging a bat) very soon. I don’t have a timeline on what they want from me or the plan. All I know is that the first step was getting out there and that the throwing kind of leads into the hitting.

“Going on the IL sucks at any point in time. I never want to do that. Sitting around and watching baseball games is not what I want to do. I want to get out there tomorrow if it were up to me, but going to look at being out there whenever it’s ready. I didn’t really know where I was going to be come today. I don’t think it went badly in terms of what I was feeling and how it’s progressed over the last few days. I think I’m in a very good spot and hopeful to be back in there as soon as possible.”

Anthony has struggled at the plate early this season, slashing .229/.354/.321 with one home run and five runs batted in across 30 games, but batted .292 with eight home runs in 70 games as a rookie last season.

A lot of the pressure for Boston's offense to succeed lies on the 22-year-old's shoulders, and the sooner he can return to the field the better.
