The Boston Red Sox believed they were set at third base for the near future after acquiring Caleb Durbin in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason.
Boston's offseason plans were thrown awry when Alex Bregman walked in free agency, leaving a massive hole in the lineup and at the hot corner. Though Durbin has been great defensively this season, he has not added much to the Red Sox's offense, slashing a mere .163/.241/.238 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 48 games.
As the 26-year-old's struggles at the plate continue, the Red Sox have begun utilizing more of a platoon at the hot corner, plugging in players like Nick Sogard and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. With his extended slump continuing to loom over his head, Durbin addressed the possibility of being demoted to Triple-A.
“That stuff’s out of my hands,” Durbin said on Wednesday, per MassLive's Christopher Smith. “At the end of the day, I want to be here. I want to be in the fight with these guys. I’m happy to be a Red Sox, and I’m confident that moving forward, it will turn eventually. But it’s like you want it to turn right now.”
Durbin flashed plenty of potential in his rookie season last year, slashing .256/.334/.387 and finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. Despite being under contract through the 2031 season, the sophomore third baseman's spot on the roster is anything but guaranteed.
Players like Sogard and Kiner-Falefa have surprisingly been giving Boston a much-needed offensive boost recently, and Craig Breslow is actively having conversations about adding players before the trade deadline.
Durbin has been an excellent defender this season, but he needs to return to form at the plate soon if he doesn't want to get demoted to Triple-A. It will be interesting to see if the 26-year-old can turn things around.
