Caleb Durbin Comments On Red Sox Benching Him Prior Too Hot Streak originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox acquired Caleb Durbin in the offseason, but he had not been performing up to expectations.
Durbin was hitting .163 with a .479 OPS through his first 48 games. However, in his last six games, he is 9-for-24 with five doubles and a triple. He is finally looking more like the player he was with the Milwaukee Brewers last season. However, before his hot streak the team benched him for two days.
Durbin was benched on May 26 and 27. It was a low point in his season. He had been a good defender at third base, but he was not hitting. Durbin reflected on the time off, noting it helped him.
"I think those couple days that I didn’t start was kind of a nice reset,” Durbin told The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey in a story published on Thursday. “Just watched the game from the dugout, learned a lot, watched a lot of swings and obviously was doing a ton of work on my own, knowing that I could kind of push it a little bit pregame in the cage. Obviously when you’re not hitting, all you can think about is hitting. So you want to put extra work in to figure it out.”
Durbin did put in extra work. He spent time with private hitting coaches and worked on some things. He worked at Gradum GSwing in Waltham with Lorenzo Garmendia.
Whatever he worked on has gotten results. The key will be for him to remain consistent. If Durbin starts hitting and the Red Sox get healthy, they could really start making a postseason push.
