MADRID, SPAIN - APRIL 07: Luis Diaz of FC Bayern Munich celebrates scoring his team's first goal with teammate Serge Gnabry during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final First Leg match between Real Madrid CF and FC Bayern München at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on April 07, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. Fulltime Observations

  • Overall, Bayern was the better team tonight. Real Madrid created quality chances but lacked the overall precision to earn a favorable result, especially in the midfield. Real Madrid made a good surge in the final 20 minutes but did not deserve a draw.
  • Dayot Upamecano had a tough assignment but was only punished once for a bevy of mental mistakes.
  • Manuel Neuer had a number of world class moments to thwart Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, ending the match with nine saves.
  • Bayern conceded control over the final third of the match. Zero pressure, little possession, and playing with fear.
  • Jamal Musiala’s brain is working faster than his body right now. He knows what he wants but can’t quite execute the way he wants.
  • That was a stressful night, but at the end of the day Bayern won at the Bernabéu for the first time since 2001 and will have a one-goal advantage at home next week for the second leg.

Bayern heads back to Germany this weekend for a road match against relegation zone side, St. Pauli. Bayern will likely rest most of the starters in anticipation of the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday against Real Madrid.

46’: No changes from either side.

Halftime Observations

  • Michael Olise is having a lot of success beating Álvaro Carreras in 1v1 situations. If he can blast a couple balls across the face of the goal, instead of chipping them into traffic, any Bayern attacker making a forward run could be on the receiving end.
  • Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé got behind the Bayern backline on multiple occasions, but Manuel Neuer was up to the task. Unfortunately, Manuel Neuer’s distribution has been oddly abysmal.
  • Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry both had free shots on goal but hit them at the only Real Madrid player blocking the path. This match could easily be 2-0 at the halftime break.
  • Real Madrid’s rigid 5-3-2 defensive structure is effectively conserving energy for the home team. Bayern is taking 20-30 passes to get into Real Madrid’s box. Real Madrid is only making 2-3 passes to get a shot on target. Both teams are executing their preferred strategy.
  • That goal was sublime. Quick passing, well-timed runs, and a perfect finish.

HT: Bayern up 1-0 at the break.

41’: GOOOAAALLL! Bayern up 1-0. Joshua Kimmich blocks the pass, Michael Olise finds Serge Gnabry, Gnabry plays a quick give-and-go with Harry Kane, and Gnabry slots it through to Luis Díaz for a beautiful finish.

1’: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!

No real surprises in the starting XI but it is a relief to Bayern fans that Harry Kane is healthy enough to start. Vincent Kompany has the entire bench at his disposal and this match might come down to the second half tactical changes and substitutions.

Over the weekend, Bayern Munich staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory on the road against Freiburg. Bayern will need to be much sharper in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Real Madrid. Bayern easily defeated Atalanta in the Round of 16 (6-1, 4-1) to advance to the quarterfinal stage for the 14th time out of the last 15 seasons (2019 was the lone exception).

Real Madrid suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Mallorca, but that upset should be ignored by Bayern fans. Real Madrid smothered Manchester City with a 5-1 aggregate score to advance from the Round of 16. On the bright side, Real Madrid has lost three times at the Bernabéu this season.

Prediction

Bayern draws 2-2. The remaining La Liga teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid) all pose unique problems to Bayern’s style of play, primarily in their counterattacking abilities. Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanišić will need to be more cautious in their forward runs. Both teams will hold and lose the lead, with Kylian Mbappé scoring first, Bayern answering with goals from Michael Olise and Harry Kane, then Bayern conceding a late minute equalizer from a corner kick.
