Ravens eye internal promotion at wide receivers coach position

While the Ravens have requested to interview Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Tyler Tettleton, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that current Ravens assistant wide receivers coach Prentice Gill will also interview for the team's top WR coaching job. In his two years with Baltimore, Gill has earned a reputation for improving a wide receivers room that often struggled to get production from homegrown talent.

The Ravens' wide receivers have historically been a challenge. Before Torrey Smith, and even with recent drafts including Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, Rashod Bateman, and now Zay Flowers, it has often been difficult to develop drafted players into a consistent, productive unit. The team's most successful receivers were typically free agents in the later stages of their careers, underscoring the challenge Gill now faces in developing homegrown talent into reliable contributors.

If promoted, Gill will face the challenge of continuing to develop Baltimore's young wide receivers while turning the position from a historical weakness into a consistent strength. His familiarity with the roster and proven ability to improve production from homegrown talent make him a natural candidate, but the Ravens' next top WR coach will need to turn potential into performance if Baltimore wants sustained success at the position.
