Regardless of what may have been said earlier or whatever complaints have surfaced since then, the Baltimore Ravens have done a great job so far this offseason. The NFL Draft will provide another opportunity to improve the roster.
The message is clear. They came to improve, and among their most impactful signings was the addition of Trey Hendrickson, one that immediately energized the fan base and addressed one of the team’s biggest needs. For a defense looking to regain its edge, literally and figuratively, the move made perfect sense.
Who would have thought? Apparently, not everyone saw it that way.
Alex Kay recently offered an alternate reality in a piece highlighting free-agent contracts he wished had happened. One of his more surprising takes? Hendrickson would have been better suited joining the Dallas Cowboys. Yes. those Dallas Cowboys. It’s the kind of suggestion that makes you pause, not because Dallas didn't need help. They absolutely did, but it's deeper than that. Baltimore felt like such a natural fit. The Ravens needed pass-rush juice. Hendrickson needed a contender. That pairing checked every box.
Kay’s reasoning leaned heavily on Dallas' defensive struggles and the need for a proven edge presence. Fair enough. The Cowboys lacked consistent production up front, and adding a player of Hendrickson's caliber would have addressed that immediately, but that's only half of the story.
Baltimore didn't just need a pass rusher. They needed this pass rusher. Sure, it would have been nice to pair him with Maxx Crosby, but sometimes, things don't work out. Hendrickson is a player capable of changing games, collapsing pockets, and taking pressure off the rest of the defensive front. He's going to scare opposing offensive coordinators even after battling injuries last season.
More importantly, the Ravens were in a position to actually make the move happen. That's the difference between theory and reality. Dallas might have benefited. Baltimore did benefit. Sometimes, that's all that really needs to be said. When the regular season begins, Baltimore won't be worrying about hypotheticals. They'll be enjoying the results.
