A team as bad as the Cardinals has to have 2 starters come from their first 2 picks...I don't know if we have that. I sure hope Byrant Johnson can be out scrubs like Kasper but as for Pace...can he beat out Johnson or Wakefiled this year(I again hope so)?

Just Wait

Just because they didn't address the needs as everyone wanted, they got consistent players. They will still be adrressing needs in FA's like Marcus Robinson after the draft. So just wait.

I say a 'C' rating. Simply because it could have been better, but then it could have been that much worse.;)

I would have drafted Mathis at #37. I really think the Cards are overly gang-banging the WR position. I like Peterson over Long, but agree with you about choosing them over Hayes, but I also like Hayes.

I started late Day 1 giving the Cards an F, but raised it to a D when they selected Hayes, King and Gilbert.

The killer here is that if Pace (or Dennis Johnson) and a more experienced Wendell can't come through for us next year, we essentially have the same pass defense (i.e. poor coverage in combination with lack of a rush) that we had last year. We have done little if anything to help ourselves.

I gave it a C

First the bad:

Gave up too much on the trade down. It should have been EITHER trading down in the 2nd OR throwing in the 4th -- not both

The Pace pick was a reach, but in my opinion, not as big a one as some think. Tyler Brayton, a very similiarly ranked player, went to Oakland at 32. That being said, I think Pace is a player that will need a year before he can be counted on, and Coach Mac doesnt have that year. Dennis Johnson, last years pass rush project better make an impact this year.

The good: I really like both the receiver picks. Both play faster than posted times, and both are as ready as any rookie to come in and contribute right away, unlike a Calico who is a Martay Jenkins type project.

I also like the Kenny King pick -- he may find a role as a pass rush type inside player. I thought good value for the fifth round.

This draft gets a big, fat D from me.

Negatives:

- We didn't get a single legitimate playmaker.

- We didn't get anyone that can contribute significantly this year

- We didn't help the pass rush at all.

Positives:

- The offense looks promising for 2004, with four solid players

- We did manage to get Fred Wakefield out of the starting lineup (apparently, KVB takes his spot and Pace moves into the RDE spot)

- We might be able to stop someone from taking a kickoff to the house this year (I know it's not much, but that's why they're getting a "D".

en fuego, I gave a C also, and my opinions are very similar to yours on the players you mentioned. But, my favorite pick was Hayes. I saw Pitt play Miami, A&M, Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame this year. He stood out in every game, he's a stud. He'll be our starting MLB in one or two years.

I had the draft as a C- for day 1, liking Calvin Pace a lot more than most of you do.

Then the second day happened and we gat tremendous value for our positions. Chris and Jeff are both correct - the second day was excellent.

The Pittsburgh MLB is perfect for this McGinnis scheme and the OT from Clarion, in my opinion, was our best pick of the whole draft when considering value for relative position.

I give this draft a C+ until I get to see Pace next week. Then I'll reevaluate.

I say C.

Who said A? Even Bill Bidwill would not say A. I think they did a nice job of recovery from the 1st round trade fiasco. I mean it obviously did not go as they thought. And did a good job of crisis managemnt.

We need two categories. I'd say B for the players, D for how we got them. I'll take odds now that in two years we aren't talking about any major busts from this draft. I guess the Cards are so used to overpaying in Free Agency they assumed they had to reach and overpay in the early rounds as well. At least the later rounds look like good value for the selection spot.
