ARLINGTON – So much for getting a full healthy lineup together soon.
A day after Josh Jung told reporters his strained left calf was “trending in the not wrong direction,” his timeline for returning was pushed back again and he left the ballpark in a walking boot. After the Rangers’ 5-4 win over San Francisco, manager Skip Schumaker said it would be at least another week before Jung, out since July 22, will return.
This from an injury that Jung initially thought would not cause him to miss more than two or three games.
The Rangers gave no other details on Jung’s situation. When asked if Jung had suffered a setback, Schumaker said “it is not healing as fast as we’d like.” The Rangers have struggled against left-handers since Jung's injury, and San Francisco is planning to start lefty Carson Whisenhunt on Wednesday.
When the Rangers were inactive at Monday’s trade deadline, president of baseball operations Chris Young and Schumaker had both indicated that part of their belief in the Rangers’ as contenders, as constructed, was due to getting a number of players back shortly from the IL.
Jung was thought to be the closest of those with reliever Jakob Junis not even eligible until Aug. 13, if he needs only the minimum time on the IL.
The Rangers did get some positive news on the rehab front Tuesday. After the game, Schumaker announced that lefty Cody Bradford will start Wednesday’s series finale against San Francisco. It will be Bradford’s first major league appearance since Sept. 25, 2024. Bradford suffered an elbow injury in spring training in 2025 that ultimately required internal brace surgery and his recovery was slowed by setbacks in the spring.
He made four rehab appearances since mid-July, allowing eight hits and one run in 10 innings. He has pitched nine consecutive scoreless innings over his last three outings, including four innings against Reno for Triple-A Round Rock last Thursday.
“I’m ready,” Bradford said Monday afternoon, before it was announced he’d return to the rotation. “I’m excited to get back out there and help.”
