ARLINGTON — The reinforcements are on their way.

Rangers left-handed pitcher Cody Bradford threw a live bullpen session prior to Thursday's game vs. the Detroit Tigers at Globe Life Field and, per him and manager Skip Schumaker, will repeat that process once more next week before he embarks on a minor league rehab assignment. Bradford threw a 20-pitch "inning" to a host of hitters and was able to use all four of his pitches.

Bradford underwent elbow surgery last season and began his minor league rehab process earlier this year before a setback cost him more than two months of time.

"I feel like it's easy for me to get trapped in a bullpen mindset," Bradford said. "It's nice when a hitter steps in there and mind can start going closer and closer to home plate and I can just worry about pitching. I love scouting, I love playing the chess match, that's what I really enjoy and thrive [with]."

His elbow surgery counterpart, left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery, will make his third minor league rehab start at Triple-A Round Rock Thursday night as he works toward his season debut. The Rangers are suddenly shorthanded in their rotation after right-handed pitcher Jack Leiter (who played catch prior to Thursday's game) underwent ankle surgery.

"I think me and Monty both see the team in need of pitching," Bradford said. "We're hopeful that we can help serve in that way. We're working as hard as we can to get back as soon as possible."
