Sean McVay made it clear he was interested in signing veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to the Los Angeles Rams in an interview at the annual NFL league meetings in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Rams head coach has prior experience working with Cousins on a different NFL team. McVay was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders from 2014-16. At the same time, Cousins was Washington’s starting quarterback.

Los Angeles is looking for a backup quarterback to support reigning NFL Most Valuable Player, Matthew Stafford. McVay expressed that Cousins would be a good fit for the role if he was interested.

“Kirk was awesome,” McVay said on ESPN. “He’s special, he’s played at a high level. He’s a starting quarterback in this league. It’s just a matter of what he’s looking for, what the situation is. If there is some interest in us, Kirk, come see us, man. I would love to have you.”

Rams general manager Les Snead also said that it was possible Los Angeles would sign Cousins in an interview at the annual NFL meeting.

“That is a possibility,” Snead told Kay Adams on “Up & Adams” on Wednesday. “Kirk’s got opportunities, and our approach with the backup QB situation has been [to] give those players some space. They’re trying to figure out what’s next for them.

“If it’s a win-win, then we’ll make it work.”

Which Team Did Cousins Sign With?

Despite the Rams’ interest in Cousins and his connection with McVay, the four-time Pro Bowler ultimately signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, according to ESPN.

The Raiders have the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and are projected to draft Heisman Trophy winner and national champion quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

Mendoza is expected to be the starting quarterback for the Raiders next season, and Cousins will be a good mentor for Mendoza to learn from in his rookie season.
