The Atlanta Falcons released Kirk Cousins roughly three weeks ago, but the veteran quarterback remains unsigned ahead of the 2026 NFL season. The 37-year-old is reportedly weighing his options in free agency and can afford to take his time before making a decision.
While Cousins would likely prefer to start this season, he may not find an opportunity to do so in free agency. If Cousins is willing to take a backup role, he should have no shortage of interested suitors. The Los Angeles Rams are one potential landing spot for Cousins in 2026.
Rams head coach Sean McVay, who previously worked with Cousins for three seasons in Washington from 2014-2016, said the team is considering signing Cousins to back up league MVP Matthew Stafford in 2026.
"Those are things that we're very interested in possibly exploring, but again, it's really premature," McVay told reporters at the NFL league meeting. "I know Kirk has some other options and opportunities as well, but he's a guy that I have familiarity with, history and a lot of reverence for because of the gratitude from our experiences together."
Last season, Cousins and the Falcons pulled off a 27-24 upset over the Rams on ESPN's "Monday Night Football" in Week 17. Cousins didn't play a major role in the win -- 126 passing yards and one touchdown -- but he didn't make any big mistakes and that was the difference in the game.
Over his two seasons in Atlanta, Cousins passed for 5,229 yards, 28 touchdowns and 21 interceptions over 24 games. The four-time Pro Bowler started the final seven games for the Falcons in 2025, leading the team on a four-game winning streak to close the season with an 8-9 record.
We'll have to wait and see if McVay reunites with Cousins in Los Angeles, or if the team brings back Jimmy Garoppolo instead.
"Hey, I'd love to have Jimmy Garoppolo back with us," McVay said. "That's a big deal for us. He's earned the right to be able to take his time and do whatever he wants. Is there an opportunity to explore, if it's not Jimmy, (like) Kirk Cousins? Of course. I'd love to be able to be able to see what that looks like. So those are two guys we've talked about."
