The Los Angeles Rams came within a few plays of making a run all the way to the Super Bowl last season, but now they are pushing all of their chips into the middle in search of another ring.
In order to do that, Les Snead made a couple of blockbuster trades. First, the Rams brought in All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs to address the team’s biggest weakness from a year ago. Then, Los Angeles traded away defensive end Jared Versefor reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett in the biggest move of the offseason.
McDuffie, who had only been with the Rams for a short time when the Garrett deal went down, talked about what the team went through when learning that Verse was getting dealt.

“I remember when Myles Garrett got traded, that day,” McDuffie said on the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast. “The news broke, Sean McVay told the team. We went into our DB meeting and we didn’t even meet. We just talked. For an hour straight, coach was just like ‘I’m gonna just open the floor, just get your feelings out.’ Obviously, we lost Jared Verse, Jared Verse was a huge part. Guys loved him. I could tell, dude came to work, he had a high energy, he was loved. I know that kinda hurt a lot of guys when they traded him.”
The All-Pro corner also recalled the team meeting after the trade, how Sean McVay handled the situation and how much the team respected Verse when learning of his departure.
“One of my favorite moments from even just being on the team was Sean McVay standing up in front of the room, with Jared Verse in the room, saying what happened, letting Jared Verse get up and say a few words, and every single guy went up to Jared Verse, shook his hand, gave him words of encouragement,” McDuffie said. “And then guys weren’t even excited excited. Knowing you have Myles Garrett coming, I heard the news, I started smiling, I looked around and everyone was like ‘Hold on, hold on. J-Verse? You’re gonna let him go?’
“That’s special. Right there, off rip for me, there’s something here about just how tight-knit this group is. It really feels like a home.”
While it was certainly tough to let go of someone like Verse, who has a ton of potential as a young player and was beloved in the locker room. It’s easy to see why the Rams did what they did. The championship window with Matthew Stafford at quarterback won’t be open forever, and Garrett is a clear upgrade to the defensive line.
With McDuffie in the secondary and Garrett up front, this Rams defense should be battling to be the best unit in the league this fall.
