Game of the Day​

Both teams needed a win. Both teams had their ace in the circle.

And what followed was exactly what you’d expect.

St. Raphael had Izzy Sousa and Westerly had Frankie Arnold and the two flamethrowers put on a show. The Saints were able to scrap up two runs and that proved to be enough in a 2-1 win over the Bulldogs in a playoff-caliber game at Cimalore Field on Thursday evening.

Coming into the game, St. Raphael was seeded sixth in the Division I RPI, fractions of points behind fifth-place Westerly, and both teams were within earshot of fourth-place Cranston West. The teams’ needed a big performance from their biggest stars – and both got just that.

All the runs were scored in the first three innings of the game, with the Saints scoring the first on a passed ball and the second on an RBI double by Piper McMurray that brought in Ella Taylor. The Bulldogs were gifted a run when Sousa walked Arnold with two outs and the bases loaded, making it 2-1, before ending the inning with a strikeout.

Sousa didn’t make another mistake the rest of the afternoon. The senior All-Stater threw a complete game, giving up three hits with four walks and finishing with nine strikeouts.

Arnold was equally impressive, throwing all seven innings while giving up four hits, one walk and striking out nine.

With the win, St. Raphael improved to 10-3 overall and should jump Westerly in the RPI standings once they’re updated. The Saints are off until Monday when they travel to play Cranston West.

BASEBALL – Division I​

Mt. Hope 4, Coventry 3​

Will Francis doubled home Trace Dubois, who had walked and stolen second, to break a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh, and John Thompson pitched a scoreless bottom half to nail down the Huskies' thrilling road win.

Francis helped his own cause, leading the offense with two hits, a run scored and an RBI, with Logan Dubois and Wyatt Hancock also driving in runs.

On the mound, Trace Dubois struck out seven over six innings, allowing three runs (two earned), and eight hits.

For the host Oakers, Jake Mather was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and, on the mound, Andrew Repose and Ryan Pina combined for 11 strikeouts, six runs allowed (four earned) and six hits in the loss.

Cranston West 7, Lincoln 2​

Falcons starting pitcher Logan Taylor threw a complete game allowing only two runs on seven hits while striking out eight to pick up the win.

Cooper Bastia and Chris Barboza took care of the offense with three RBIs each. Angelo Minyetti and Alex Milano also contributed to the win as they banged out two hits apiece.

Lucas Marshall and Caden Oldham each collected two hits for the Lions in the loss.

Moses Brown 7, Cranston East 0​

Quaker pitchers Brayden Menard and Liam Cromie combined on a five-hit shutout victory over the Thunderbolts, with Menard striking out nine batters through six innings at sunny Cranston Stadium.

Moses Brown lead-off man Will Haggerty was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, and No. 9 batter Luke Wesner was 2-for-3 with with a run scored and one batted in.

Cranston East was led by Anthony Pimentel, who collected two hits. Starter Anthony Campos took the loss after striking out seven through four frames, allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Smithfield 14, South Kingstown 4​

Sentinels starter Domenic Lombardi was more than good enough through five innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out four batters and walking two, as Smithfield cruised to this mercy-rule shortened home victory.

The hitting stars were Luke Dwyer with two hits and four RBIs and Sam Cicchitelli and Wyatt Speakman with two hits and two RBIs each. Jake Sylvester went 1-for-3, with a pair of RBIs and scored twice, and Johnny Brown drove in a pair and scored twice.Cole Rosen had a hit and two RBIs for the Rebels in the loss.

La Salle 10, Cumberland 1​

The Rams scored once in each of the first two innings, and then the floodgates opened, with seven runs crossing the plate in the third to put this one away early.

Three La Salle pitchers combined to strike out five and allow four hits through seven innings, with starter Ryan Amaral earning the win for tossing four scoreless frames and allowing just one hit.

At the plate, Brady Collins (2-for-4) struck the biggest blow with a two-run homer in the third. Cam Slack (3-for-4) led the team with three RBIs and one run scored, and Bronx Discullio drove in a pair, as well.

Clippers lead-off man Chase Austin was 1-for-3 and scored Cumberland's lone run, and Mason Easterbrooks was 2-for-2 with a triple.

Bishop Hendricken 13, North Kingstown 2​

Hawks starting pitcher Stephen Maynard gave up just two hits in four innings, walked three batters and struck out three to get the win. Braedan Daley pitched in relief.Bishop Hendricken jumped out to the lead by scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cullen Crain and Dylan Poloski each had a hit and an RBI in that frame. Crain had four RBIs in the game and Brett Knight and Poloski had two each.For the Skippers, Brandon Venditto had a hit and an RBI and Christopher Ciarniello and Jason Pelletier had one hit each.

BASEBALL – Division II​

North Providence 9, Burrillville 1​

Cougars starter Joshua Rodriguez pitched seven strong innings, giving up just one unearned run on four hits. He struck out four batters. He was also the hitting star for North Providence. He was 3-for-4 at the plate, drove in two runs and scored a run.

Gabriel Ramirez also knocked in two runs for the Cougars. Michael Ryan had two hits, scored a run and knocked in a run, while Jayden Allard had a hit and an RBI.For the Broncos, Logan Gomez had one of his team’s four hits and its lone RBI.

West Warwick 7, Toll Gate 0​

Anthony Burt and Adrian Gonzalez combined to pitch a one-hit shutout as the Wizards blanked the Titans.

Burt, who was coming off a nine-strikeout performance in a no-decision last week collected 11 Ks in this 5-inning outing to pick up the win. Gonzalez pitched the final two innings in relief and struck out three to earn a save.

The WW offense was led by Nick Andruchow, who had two hits, including a triple, and one RBI. Joe Riviera, Charlie Brown and Adrian Gonzalez also had singles to drove in one run each.

The lone hit for the Titans came of the bat of Wyatt Dyer who singled in the third inning.

BASEBALL – Division III​

Juanita Sanchez 6, Hope 5​

The Cavaliers took an early lead over the visiting Blue Wave and held off a strong comeback attempt to notch a victory on Thursday.

The hosts plated three runs in the first thanks in large part to a Yorvit Martinez's two-run single. The Cavs add two more in the second thanks for a passed ball and a balk.

On the mound, Angel Polcano-Zorilla struck out seven and scattered three hits, and George Padilla pitched two innings of relief. Polcano-Zorilla paced the offense with two hits and two runs scored.

For Hope, Jerry Gamboa, Marcos Medrano, Cristobal Guzman and Jayvon Perez each collected a hit in the loss. The Blue Wave scored twice in the seventh inning, on a wild pitch and a Guzman single, but one run was as close as they'd get.

PCD 3, BVP 0​

Knights starter Maddux Fredericks was nearly untouchable on Thursday, striking out 11 through seven innings, and allowing two hits and three walks.

PCD pushed two runs across in the first inning, both runners scoring on errors, to take the early lead. In the fourth, Maxwell Tuthill singled home Corey Robinson-Baker, who had doubled to lead off the inning, making it 3-0. Baker led the Knights with two hits.

For the Warrior Pride, Aliezel Fernandez and Sidney Lockhart each recorded a hit in the loss. BVP starter Noah Ferreira took the hard-luck loss, striking out 11 batters over six innings, with five hits and three runs (one earned) allowed, and no walks.

Mount Pleasant 10, EWG 9​

Trailing 9-5 entering the sixth inning, the Kilties exploded for five runs to take a one-run lead, and blanked the Scarlet Knights in the top of the seventh to earn the come-from-behind victory.

Singles by Yamil Moya and Yadiel Peralta plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, and the Kilties took the lead by scoring on a passed ball. Moya and Waner Mateo each drove in two runs and scored twice, while Peralta was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

On the mound, Mateo earned the win by pitching 5.1 innings of relief with five strikeouts, five hits and four runs allowed.

Exeter-West Greenwich was paced by Dylan Main, who had two hits, two RBIs and scored once. Tyler Main and Tyler Medeiros each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the loss. Medeiros also threw five innings and struck out 10, allowing one run.

Tiverton 11, Pawtucket 8​

The visiting Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. They scored another four runs in the fourth inning.

Hitting stars for Tiverton were James Conley with three hits and an RBI, Nolan Mercer with a hit and three RBIs, Tyler Riendeau with a hit and two RBIs and Jacob Chouinard with two hits and an RBI. Mercer pitched six innings and got the win. Conley pitched the bottom of the seventh.

For Pawtucket, Jaeden Mills and Jeremy Torres knocked in two runs each.

Classical 16, Paul Cuffee 0​

Backed by a potent offense and the pitching of Hubert Matos, who pitched three innings, allowing no runs on only one hit and seven strikeouts, the Purple powered its way to victory over Paul Cuffee.

Classical collected 13 hits in the game with Eli Ozbek leading the way. Olzbek, was 3-for-5 from the three-hole with six RBI. Also having solid performances at the dish were Daniel Salazar, Julian Perry and Matos, who all had multiple hit games.

Coventry 6, Pilgrim 1​

Leah Lapham got the Oakers going on offense and Mary McGovern handled business in the circle in a 6-1 win over the Patriots.

Lapham, a senior who will play at the University of Rhode Island next spring, got her day going with a two-run double in the third and scored on a McGovern RBI single. Olivia Bamford came in as a courtesy runner for McGovern and scored on a Payton Baris single to make it 4-0 after three.

McGovern made sure the lead never disappeared. An error brought home two Pilgrim runs in the fifth, but McGovern didn’t let things get away after that. She threw a complete game, gave up six hits and two walks and struck out five.

Lapham finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs and McGovern helped her own cause, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman Amelia Caisse had one RBI and one run in the win.

Skylar Hawes drove in both runs for Pilgrim in the loss.

North Kingstown 11, Smithfield 4​

Eight of the nine Skippers who batted got hits as they rolled to an 11-4 win over the Sentinels.

Down 1-0 heading to the second, Ella Mezzanotte put North Kingstown up for good with a two-run single. Hannah Place added to the lead with an RBI single in the fourth and another run scored in the same inning as a passed ball. The Skippers put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning.

Rosemarie Hayward had a great afternoon, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Ella Mezzanotte finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and Adelyn Barnes was 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Gabby Peralta also scored two runs in the win.

NK freshman pitcher Alexis St. Germain threw a complete game, spreading out seven hits and three walks while giving up one earned run and striking out 12.

Ava Lopez and Sophie Parrillo both had two hits and one RBI in the loss.

Chariho 11, Moses Brown 4​

The Chargers offense showed up in a big way and Adriana Jeannenot put out a potential fire with a rare relief appearance in an 11-4 win over the Quakers.

Moses Brown took advantage of Jeannenot not getting the start and scored three runs in the first inning and led 4-1 going to the bottom of the second. Chariho flipped the game there, as Norah Downing – the starting pitched – got the rally going with an RBI double. Anna Tretton gave the Chargers the lead with a two-run single that made it 5-4.

Jeannenot took over in the circle in the third and MB didn’t threaten the rest of the day. The All-Stater threw four innings of no-hit relief, striking out eight, and provided plenty of support for herself, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run.

Maddie Dorgan was terrific as well, going 3-for-3 with four runs and two RBI. Tretton went 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs and Downing finushiend 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

Emmeline Monchik led the MB offense, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.

East Providence 12, EG 2​

Freshman Avery Duarte was solid in the circle and Caroline Welch and the offense gave her plenty of support in a 12-2 win over the Avengers.

East Providence gave Duarte a look in last weekend’s loss to North Kingstown and, after a solid appearance, gave her the start in this matchup against Division II East Greenwich.

Duarte threw well, pitching all five innings – the game ended early via the 10-run rule – while giving up four hits with three walks and two earned runs and finishing with eight strikeouts.

The Townies put up runs in bunches, getting three in the first and two more in the second on Welch’s home run. Welch finished her day 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.

Trinity Provencher was terrific at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Nethania Figueroa finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI and Ava Silva also drove in a pair in the win.

Charlotte Sheeran and Chloe Hartman both had one hit and one RBI in the loss for EG>

Lincoln 15, BNS 0​

Kayleigh Gouchie threw an abbreviated no-hitter and hit a bomb as well in the Lions 15-0 win over BNS.

Lincoln came to play and wasted little time putting things away, scoring three runs in the first inning and getting seven in the second – which included a Gouchie three-run home run. The Lions put up five in the third, walking off with the win when Anna Danis crossed home on a wild pitch that brought the 15-run rule into play.

Gouchie was untouchable, retiring nine of the 11 batters she faced, with one reaching on an error and the other on a walk. Gouchie didn’t give up a hit and struck out six while going 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and one run.

Lucia Whyte drove in three runs and scored three times for Lincoln and Chloe Landry drove in two and scored twice. Brooke Tillson and Alicia Valois both scored two runs in the win.

Rogers 14, Pawtucket 1​

Emma Brown led from the top as the Vikings rolled to a 14-1 win over Pawtucket.

After scoring once in the first inning, Rogers’ offense took off, scoring seven times in the second and added one in the fourth before posting five that brought the 12-run rule into play in the fifth.

Brown, the Vikings’ leadoff hitter, had one of the best games of her young career as the freshman went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Norah Gardullo was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run and Amelia Wallace finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs. Jazelle Ramos scored twice and had two RBI in the win.

Lila Leys was her usual self in the circle for Rogers, striking out seven while giving up zero earned runs.

Lauren Christian scored the lone run for Pawtucket.

Davies 17, Paul Cuffee 4​

Kylie Robert, Maci Linton and the Patriots put things away early after a big first inning that led to the 17-4 win over the Navigators.

Davies has put up some big numbers this spring and this game was no exception. It started with seven runs in the first, got three in the third and after Paul Cuffee scored four times in the bottom of the third, popped two more in the fourth to bring the 12-run rule into play.

Robert and Linton both had two hits and two RBI for the Patriots. Jaslene Rodriguez scored three times and Darelyn Maldonado, Brooke Barnes, Madison Francisco and Lixaury Negron scored two runs apiece in the win.

La Salle 10, BC High 7​

The Rams found themselves trailing by a goal at the half (5-4), but the second half was nearly all La Salle.

Quincy Marino led the way with four goals, Lachlan Got added two goals, Nick Loo recorded three assists, and a host of Ram teammates scored a single goal to upend the visiting Boston College High Eagles.

Dylan Fitzgerald was 9-for-21 on faceoffs and Connor Kelley had 16 saves in the win.

For BC High, Nate Gafahao led the way with a goal and two assists, and TJ Emsing made 11 saves in the loss.

The D-IV Chieftains scored early and often and rolled to victory over the D-III Tigers.

Cyrus Sullivan led the way for Ponaganset with four goals and three assists. Owen Machan and Levi Hicks had three goals apiece and Carter Vick, Otto Pearson, Griffin Swain and James L'Heureux all had a goal each.

Tiverton's Easton Harwood, Shane Aquiar, Bodhi Gerlach scored one goal each in the loss.

It was a historic day for Tessa Charello-Ingegneri, who helped the Avengers run past the Patriots in a 10-5 victory.

Goals haven’t been a problem for Charello-Ingegneri, who’s been a star scorer for East Greenwich since her freshman year. She didn’t lead the team in scoring against Portsmouth, but her three-goal performance put her over the 200-goal mark for her career.

Lindsey Rowe led the Avengers with four goals and Courtney Cavanagh also had a hat trick in the win. Ella Mercurio made eight saves in the win.

Sophie Sebolt and Emma Norton both scored twice for the Patriots. Gianna Sebolt had the other tally.

Captain Brooke Tellier (four goals, three assists), freshman Ella Mancuso (four goals, two assists) and freshman Hadley Henderson (two goals and two assists) led the Clippers to the overwhelming victory on their home turf. Cumberland scored six goals in the first quarter to seal the win early.For the Northmen, senior Hannah Pimental and junior Eva Corriveau scored one goal each and junior goaltender Gabby Austin made 12 saves.

The play of Mike Gallo (21 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs), Alex Osmena (6 kills, 5 aces, 2 blocks) and Ian Degnan (31 assists, 4 blocks) helped the Wizards sweep (25-19, 25-14, 25-16) the Rebels.

For SK in the loss, Luke Brock had 7 kills and 6 digs and Chase Wolstencroft dished off 17 assists.

St. Raphael had reason to celebrate with a Champagne and a Jameson. Sophomore Brighton Champagne recorded 11 kills, 3 aces and 4 digs and senior Jameson Taylor posted 10 kills, 2 blocks and 5 digs to help the Saints upend Achievement First.

For AF in the loss, Sebastian Fernandez had 10 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks and 2 digs, Zachareus Desrosiers recorded 12 kills and 7 blocks and Emmanuel Vargas Rodriguez was good for 6 kills, 3 aces and 5 blocks.

Mt. Pleasant 3, Burrillville 3​

Strong outings by Jordan Robertson (15 kills, 4 digs), Anthony Berroa (12 kills, 6 digs) and Jeremias Ixcuna (39, assists, 3 kills, 3 aces) paved the way for the Kilties win.

In the loss, the Broncos were led by Cayden Closson with 2 aces, 8 kills, 20 digs, 21 assists and Omar Espinal with 39 digs and 4 block.
