Last offseason, Jeremy Chinn hit free agency at a good time. That was by design, mostly. He had entered free agency in 2024 coming off two injury shortened seasons, which meant he was a buy low free agent. After one season in Washington, the former second round pick returned to the form that he had shown early in his career. That season earned him a lucrative two-year deal with the Raiders.
At 28 years of age, Chinn is again entering a contract year. That means he will either earn an extension with the Raiders or enter the market again, looking for a coveted long term deal. Perhaps the last one he will ever get in the NFL. So, it's a pretty big season for him.
His best chance to get that deal is to stay healthy. Obviously his play will have a lot to do with it too, but he can't put anything on tape if he's not on the field. For that reason, staying healthy is Chinn's top priority and that's what his focus has been this offseason.
Or, as Chinn put it, "Becoming bulletproof."
How does he do that? "Working. I mean, I've been here. I've been in Las Vegas my whole offseason. So, I'll be here for the rest of the year, just getting ready for the season."
Becoming bulletproof can be taken in more than way. Another way he could mean is becoming irreplaceable.
Last season with the Raiders, he proved pretty valuable. He basically took over for the departed Tre'von Moehrig and played the 'Star' role in the Raiders defense. The 6-3, 220-pounder is the new breed of nickel corner. Able to take on many roles including cornerback, safety, and outside linebacker. Playing in the box, in the slot, and in the deep part of the field.
What happened this offseason is the Raiders acquired nickel cornerback Taron Johnson from Buffalo in a trade, and drafted versatile Arizona safeties Treydan Stukes and Dalton Johnson.
Those acquisitions probably have Chinn feeling like he's fighting to keep his job. And he might just be. That's not to say he didn't perform well enough last season to keep his job, but to say that he can't rest assured that will continue. At least not without him proving he is the best man for the job.
He has several players right now gunning for his job. He may just have to be bulletproof to keep his job.
