Madsen on Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards
Source: Film Focus
March 23, 2005

Film Focus talked to Michael Madsen who will star in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, about a platoon of World War II soldiers trapped behind enemy lines. He says that Tarantino might split the movie up into several parts like he did for the two "Kill Bill" films.

"He's got an interesting idea of how to make it. I think he's going to cut it up into a couple of different parts, 'cos it's a big story to tell and he doesn't want to cram it all into one show. I don't know the whole story of how he's going to do it but eventually we'll get there, you know," said Madsen.

Tarantino earlier this month commented on the movie as well. "My next film is probably going to be Inglorious Bastards, yeah. I've written scenes. I've written a lot of it but now I have to sit down and start putting it together in a script that I can start shooting. And that's a different thing," he said.

I'm not the biggest Tarantino fan, but I loved the full Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs. Can't wait to see what he does with a period piece.

I hate that filmmakers are splitting up their films without wrapping up a storyline in each installment. Kill Bill, LOTR, now this. I hate it. To me, it's laziness on the filmaker's part.

LOTR? Seriously? What do you want, an 8-hour movie? Regardless of how good it is, it wouldn't make money, and unfortunately, that's what would happen.

That said, however, I agree with you wholeheartedly about Kill Bill, which was essentially a 3 and a half hour movie split in 2. For all we know, Inglorious Bastards might have a 400 page script, and it's usually a page-a-minute, and 400 minutes is a really long time, so it makes some sense to split it up. Hopefully that's the case.

*gasp* He said something bad about LOTR! Stone him!

I want it split up into 3 movies each with a beginning, middle and end.

Hollywood does it all the time. Look at Star Wars. That's not an 8 hour movie--it's three complete movies that together tell a larger story, but each contain a complete story of their own.

We've talked about this before, Chap. I know you disagree.

What?
I like it when a director gets a mega-hit, and instead of leaving it alone, he just keeps doing remastered releases with a bunch of extra crap tooting his own horn. Yeah, that's what I like.

Can't do it with LOTR...because they weren't like that. He originally conceived of them as one book, so it's one continuous plot. It DOESN'T break down well into three books, and that's why the middle book is weaker...it just bridges the plot gap. No way PJ could have made you happy with those 3 movies, because of your unrealistic expectations.

My stance on these movies have always been that they did not translate well to the film medium. I stand by it--I didn't like those movies.

That's cool. Every man is entitled to his opinion, and I respect yours. Did you like the books, though? If so, outside some changes that I hated, I don't know why you wouldn't like the movies. The arcs of each book were reflected almost perfectly in the arcs of the movies.

Casting so far: Mike Myers, Brad Pitt, Nastassja Kinski, Simon Pegg, David Krumholtz, B.J. Novak and Eli Roth.

Edit: Simon Pegg announced on his MySpace page that he wil not be in Quentin's film: Pegg says that he won't be able to star in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards. as was previously reported. "Much to our mutual disappointment, I won't be appearing in QT's forthcoming 'Inglorious Bastards' due to insurmountable scheduling difficulties," he said. "We really tried to make it work but in the end, it just was not possible without severe ramifications elsewhere. I'm trying to remain upbeat, as Tom Selleck said 'Who the hell is Indiana Jones anyway?'"

Edit: Ain't It Cool News adds that former "Freaks and Geeks" star Samm Levine will play one of Brad Pitt's underlings, while David Krumholtz won't be joining the film.

Brad Pitt in a Tarantino flick? Um.

Problems with Pitt? The guy relishes destroying his pretty boy image. He seems perfect for a Tarantino flick.

Pitt, to me, is a good film actor, much better than his peers, capable of more than one or two notes. That's actually raising the bar if you consider some of the B- and C-list actors Tarantino rescued in the 90s.

See Pitt in 12 Monkeys. That should answer any questions about Pitt's ability to act. You've also got Fight Club and Seven. Pitt is a really talented actor.
Yup, the guy can act.

Here are another few more outstanding performances :

Assassination of Jesse James....

Snatch ( best acting- IMHO)

Kalifornia

Whoa guys, I'm not questioning his acting ability. He proved he can play more than the pretty boy with Snatch, 12 Monkeys, and Fight Club. He just doesn't seem the type to headline a Tarantino flick. He tends not to go with the Hollywood headliners in his films, that's all.

That's up to interpretation. Bruce Willis was still huge when he did Pulp Fiction. John Travolta was a former A-lister until his career took a dump in the 80s with those talking baby movies. Sam Jackson was well on his way to A-list status with or without Pulp Fiction.

With Reservoir Dogs, Harvey Keitel had just finished Thelma Louise and had agreed to the lead in The Piano.

Kill Bill featured Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu in her prime. He got Michael Keaton and Robert De Niro for Jackie Brown. Jessica Alba for Sin City.

Tarantino is pretty famous for casting Hollywood (presumed) stiffs and throwaways and giving them roles they can do something with. But he's also pretty good and dirtying up the pretty and favored elite. It just depends on the role.
