Qualifier 2 in IPL playoffs explained: Format and complete history of results originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
Qualifier 2 is the IPL's last knockout match where one team books the final, and the other goes home.
The Q2 winner has gone on to win the title roughly one-fifth of the time.
IPL 2026's Qualifier 2 will be held on May 29 in New Chandigarh, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.
What is Qualifier 2 and why does it matter?
Before 2011, the IPL used a simple four-team semi-final knockout. Lose and your season was over. The revamped playoff structure that arrived ahead of the 2011 season changed all of that and nowhere is the drama more concentrated than in Qualifier 2.
This is cricket's toughest room. Two teams, one match, no margin for error. One side is the loser of Qualifier 1, a team that had earned the privilege of two bites at the cherry after finishing in the top two of the league stage, now forced to fight back from the edge.
The other is the winner of the Eliminator, a team that clawed its way back from third or fourth on the points table and has already survived sudden death.
The beauty of Qualifier 2 is the tension it creates. For the Q1 loser, it is a bitter fall from grace and a desperate attempt at redemption. For the Eliminator winner, it is a team on a momentum surge, already having beaten the odds once. Neither side can afford a bad day.
Win, and you're in the final. Lose, and the season is finished.
