MCHENRY — Top-seeded Potomac Valley exploded for eight runs in the third inning to roll to a 10-0 romp of Charleroi in Game 1 of its Fayette County Baseball League semifinal playoff series on Sunday at Garrett College.

Potomac Valley, 17-2, finished in a tie with the Carmichaels Copperheads for the top spot in the league, but the Mudcats are the top seed by virtue of taking two of three regular-season meetings.

Charleroi, 9-9, snuck into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed. Carmichaels and the Mill Run Millers also opened their series Sunday.

Noah Broadwater (Garrett College/Keyser) tripled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the Mudcats at the plate Sunday.

Bryce Snyder (Frostburg State/Mountain Ridge) doubled, Logan Rotruck (WVU Potomac State/Keyser) went 2 for 2 with two ribbies and two runs, Conner Blake was 2 for 3 and scored twice, and Conner Tingler drove in a pair.

Tingler was the winning pitcher in the five-inning romp, tossing three shutout innings of two-hit ball with five strikeouts and no walks. McAlpine threw two scoreless, no-hit frames in relief, fanning four and walking one.

Colton Brightwell took the loss for Charleroi, allowing 10 runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 frames.
