The Jets drafted Taylor with the No. 42 overall pick in the second round Friday night in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In the lead up to the three-day event, the LSU standout tight end was projected between a second- and third-round selection.

What Mason Taylor brings to NFL TEAM in 2025 NFL Draft

Taylor is one of the more fluid route runners at his position in this year's draft class, noticeable by his evaluation as a top five tight end by nearly all experts. At 6-foot-5, 251 pounds, how well Taylor accelerates off the ball and how well he catches passes in tight windows and coverage is exceptional.

Moreso, Taylor is known around LSU for his clutch genes, highlighted by his game-winning two-point conversion catch against Alabama as a freshman. With his father being Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, Mason has been very professional in his approach and work ethic dating back to his before his time at LSU.

Mason Taylor highlights, strengths, weaknesses at LSU

Just like the aforementioned game-changing focus and execution, Taylor plays better when the drive or game is on the line. He became the primary third-down target for LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier this past season and his production in those moments were critical for the team's success in 2024.

The way Taylor can find windows in zone coverage and his feel for how he's being covered in man, almost demands the ball get thrown his way and he welcomes a high volume of targets.

One weakness in Taylor's game is his run blocking. At times, he didn't play physical enough in the run game and his technique needs work, which he will get in the NFL.

Mason Taylor stats with LSU

Taylor etched his name in the record books at LSU in three years. He caught 129 passes for 1,308 yards, both program-bests for a tight end. Last season, he logged 55 receptions, also a record for a tight end in a single season.

His single-game best was eight catches with 88 yards receiving.
