While the Cincinnati Reds were able to upgrade their power hitting by signing Eugenio Suarez, they still need a true slugger that can balance contact and power, and play well defensively to co-star with Elly De La Cruz. However, they whiffed on Kyle Schwarber, who is from Cincy, and now have to pivot.

Fansided’s Mark Powell and Wynston Wilcox believe the Reds should make a deal with the Minnesota Twins for their two-time All-Star Byron Buxton. Buxton isn’t quite the home run hitter Schwarber is, but he is leagues better defensively.

“The Cincinnati Reds were in contention for Kyle Schwarber before he ultimately returning to the Philadelphia Phillies. If the Reds couldn't land Schwarber, I guess Buxton is a decent replacement. The Reds reached the MLB postseason last year for the first time in 2020 and they're starving for a playoff win for the first time since 2012. Going after Buxton would give Elly De La Cruz the help he needs and make bringing Eugenio Suarez back worth it,” Powell and Wilcox wrote.

This past season, Buxton slashed .264/.327/.551/.878 with 21 doubles, 35 home runs, and 83 RBI in 126 games played. He would give the outfield a major facelift, and would do very well roaming center field.

This move would also be financially feasible for the Reds ,as Buxton’s only set to make around $45 million over the final three years of his contract. For a small-to-mid market team like Cincinnati, getting a guy like Buxton could be perfect.

Hopefully, the Reds realize what a good pivot this could be, and try to get Buxton on their squad ASAP.
