I so enjoyed reading your posts, 82, about the golf tourney and the restaurant...and how receptive SK and the players were to you and the fans. They are enjoying this ride even more than we are---and that's saying a lot, isn't it?

It really, REALLY is Mitch! Not sure how long this ride will last and when it does end, if we'll ever see anything like it again... So I'm soaking it in to the fullest! We are so incredibly blessed to have this amazing confluence of high-quality human beings in Michael, Keim and BA, as well as players throughout our roster! They ALL represent themselves, their families, the franchise, the valley and the state of Arizona so amazingly well... And, oh yea - they are all epically talented!!! This just doesn't happen all that often in professional sports. Frankly, it's still hard to completely digest...

Theoretically they aren't prohibited from trading back into round one. They were set to pick at 29. Here's the NFL ruling.
"For the violation of the playing rules and the failure to cooperate in the subsequent investigation, the New England Patriots are fined $1 million and will forfeit the club's first-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft and the club's fourth-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. If the Patriots have more than one selection in either of these rounds, the earlier selection shall be forfeited. The club may not trade or otherwise encumber these selections."
If they traded to a pick earlier than 29 they would forfeit that pick, so it makes no sense. They can't trade compensatory picks so only Carolina, Arizona & Denver could trade with them and they had little other than a player to trade. They must have asked for the Cards' first, but Keim rejected that. As it is NE in a sense got a first and second for a soon-to-be free agent. Not a bad gamble for either team.

Meanwhile, Keim, Arians, and Bidwill have sent the league office a bouquet of flowers and boxes of chocolates as appreciation for Deflategate.

Steve Kiem is a very good GM. He is the single biggest reason for all our recent success. We better lock him up long term.

Agree with this, though I think he may be one of the best GM's in the NFL, not simply a very good one. His moves after the Whisenhunt era single handedly made us relevant. That's almost impossible with a franchise as hapless as we've been in our history. He's all about building a team, but he knows how to play politics too, to keep the coach happy. I'll just use one example, though there are others: he allowed BA to bring in a Drew Stanton, whom BA favored and actually thought at one time would be our starting QB. Stanton is no starting QB, but he was effective coming in relief and even starting so that we won games and remained relevant. At the same time he was bringing in Stanton, he was working on the Palmer deal. So Keim got his guy and BA got his.

Some quick stats:

  • After 15 seasons working within the Cardinals personnel department, was elevated to GM on January 8, 2013.
  • Named Sporting News 2014 NFL Executive of the Year and has earned back-to-back NFL Executive of the Year honors from the editors of Pro Football Talk (2013-14).
  • During his first two seasons as GM the Cardinals posted a 21-11 record, tying a franchise record for wins in back-to-back seasons (1974-75, 1975-76).
  • During his first 24 months as GM (January of ’13 through December of ’14), Keim executed 410 roster moves. Keim made 217 roster moves in 2014 as the team posted an 11-5 record and tied the franchise mark for wins in a season despite 21 players missing 109 total games due to injury.
  • Of the seven GMs hired in January of 2013, only Keim and Carolina’s Dave Gettleman had their teams in the postseason in 2014.

(I should say, Keim is hardcore, he set the precedent early about not budging, he knows what he's willing to spend and he won't compromise, and that sets the bar going forward. Players know when they leave town he's probably done)

In my mind, Keim is even more instrumental in our success than BA. I'd also add that Michael Bidwill is just as instrumental. It's a trifecta of awesomeness.

(Nice post Mitch)
