As we gear up for the 2026 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down nearly every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player’s background, recruiting rankings out of high school, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko.
A major focus of the offseason has been the secondary, a position group that Elko has worked to make more athletic and explosive. His approach has centered on bringing in elite speed and developing those athletes into SEC‑caliber starters. One corner who is still flying a bit under the radar is Julio Humphrey, who transferred from Georgia ahead of last season.
Humphrey appeared in 10 of A&M’s 13 games but did not start in 2025. The lack of starts was not tied to talent. Elko already had two established corners, and Humphrey needed time to learn the system and adjust to the program’s expectations. After a full year in the scheme and a strong spring, he has positioned himself squarely in the competition to start in 2026.
The former four-star prospect was selected to play in the 2022 All‑America Bowl and earned a spot on 247Sports’ 2022 Freaks List. A multi‑sport athlete, he also starred on the track, posting elite junior-year marks with a 10.55 in the 100 meters, a 21.17 in the 200, and a 20‑5½ long jump. Humphrey was a first‑team all‑district selection in both 2020 and 2019, establishing himself early as one of the top two‑way athletes in Texas.
The cornerback room will feature heavy competition this season. With Will Lee III off to the NFL, there is an open spot opposite Dezz Ricks. The battle for that second starting job will come down to Humphrey and Tennessee transfer Rickey Gibson III, both of whom bring the athletic traits Elko wants on the perimeter. A rotation wouldn’t be surprising and depending on how the staff plans to deploy the nickel position, there’s a real possibility all three could be on the field at the same time.
