CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers have a new President of Basketball Operations in Mike Gansey. The Sixers have brought in the Olmsted Falls, OH native to replace Daryl Morey, who held the position for six years before he and the franchise parted ways.

Normally, when a team brings in a new head of the basketball operations department, it means a new coach as well. Instead, Nick Nurse will return for his fourth season in Philadelphia. He has garnered a 116-130 record in three seasons with the Sixers, but in his defense, he has dealt with so much in terms of injuries--mainly to his superstar big man, Joel Embiid--players being in and out of the lineup, and having to deal with a different roster on a nightly basis.

Gansey has experience with Nurse during his brief playing career. He revealed that Nurse coached him in the 2011 summer league and it probably led to him getting his deal to play professionally overseas in Spain.

"I played for Nick," Gansey beamed when asked about Nurse. "This was back in 2011. The G League Select, back when we were playing in Las Vegas for summer league, Nick actually made me look good. He got me a nice deal in Spain the next year, ran a lot of ATOs for me. We were 1-9, I think, against him that year when he was with the Iowa Energy, so we couldn't beat him, but I'm just super excited to work with Nick. I mean, I have all the respect for him."

Nurse, of course, has a championship on his resume with the Toronto Raptors in 2019 and he has done a great job of adjusting and making sure the Sixers are prepared every night. He is deserving of another chance to get this right.

"Championship-level coach. A 21-win improvement last year," Gansey added. "I mean, he's had to go through a lot these last couple of years with injuries and lineups in and out. I think he had 30 different starting lineups this year, because I know the Cavs, we had 41, and that's that's hard to do, because us in Cleveland, we made the playoffs. With that many guys out, usually you're not winning a lot of games."

It appears that Gansey and Nurse will be looking to get things moving in the right direction in the 2026-27 season. It will take some time to get everybody moving forward and on the same page as they begin their partnership.

"I'm just really excited to work with Nick, and him to know me a little bit more, but be able to work with him, and we're going to be aligned," Gansey finished. "He's a championship-level coach, so we're excited to have him, and I'm just excited to work with him. Just ready to hit the ground running."
