PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The Big 12 Conference races stayed tight in both boys and girls basketball on Friday.
League-leading Peoria High beat visiting Notre Dame, 66-39, to improve to 7-0 in the conference. Normal Community beat Manual, 56-50, to move to 5-1 and drop the Rams to 5-2 in the Big 12.
Two teams remain unbeaten in the girls conference race. Notre Dame beat Peoria High and Richwoods beat Danville so both the Irish and Knights improves to 6-0 in the league.
Normal Community’s win at Manual pushes the Iron to 6-1 in the league.
Other girls basketball winners included Dunlap and Canton. Other boys winners included Metamora, East Peoria, Bloomington, Pontiac, Farmington, Leroy and Tremont.
Tremont’s Josh Papenhause hit a short shot in the final seconds as the Turks rallied to beat El Paso-Gridley, 71-69, in the semifinals of the McLean County/Heart of Illinois Conference Tournament. The Turks advance to Saturday’s title game and will face top-seeded LeRoy, which edged Lexington 60-57, in the other semifinal.
