PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Defending girls track state champion El Paso-Gridley is headed back to state with momentum.
The Titans cruised to the title at the class 1A Tremont sectional on Thursday night. EPG’s 133 points easily outdistanced runner-up LVC (82.5) and third place Illini Bluffs (70).
Jaida Reed led the way, winning both the 100-and-200-meter races. She was also on the winning 4×100 and 4×200 relays.
El Paso-Gridley’s Keyli Cogdal won the 300 hurdles and was second in the 100 hurdles. The Titans also won the 4×800 relay.
Fellow Heart of Illinois Conference school Tri-Valley won the 1A Maroa sectional. The state meet is May 21-23 in Charleston.
In softball, Illini Bluffs senior Sara Finn had three hits including a two-run homer as the Tigers beat visiting Brimfield, 7-3. Dunlap, East Peoria, Metamora and Canton also won in softball.
Baseball winners Thursday included Metamora, Limestone and Tremont.
Morton lineman Soren Fifer committed to the University of Illinois. The 6-7, 300-pound junior chose Illinois over other Big Ten suitors Indiana, Iowa, Oregon and Northwestern.
Notre Dame freshman Siena Stone was selected to play on a USA U15 national soccer team that is headed to the Netherlands next week. That national team will train and play two games in Holland.
