The Pioneer boys basketball team defeated Carroll 50-43 Saturday night at the Cage.

The Panthers (2-9) picked up their second win of the season and beat the Cougars (3-9) for the first time since 2019.

Micah Rans, in his second weekend back since coming back from a broken leg, scored 18 points to lead Pioneer. Phillip McFatridge and Ronnie Layer had eight points apiece. Shiloh Rine had seven points and five steals. Gabriel Scott added five points and seven rebounds.

“It was a really nice win for us,” Pioneer coach Darren McKaig said. “This is Micah‘s second weekend back and he’s looking better and better. His defense, his offense, his ball handling was really good. But it was a total team effort. Shiloh had some nice baskets. He had five steals and four rebounds. Gabe hit some timely shots and had seven rebounds. Ronnie Layer hit a big 3 for us in the fourth quarter that broke the lead open. Phillip is just all over the place. I’m not sure that we even realize how much he contributes to the game. I think we forced 20 turnovers and many of them may have been caused by him. It was really nice to get a win heading into a conference game on Tuesday.”

Pioneer hosts North Miami on Tuesday night.

WEST CENTRAL 51, CASTON 50

In an atmosphere that rivaled a sectional final, the Trojans got a bucket with 3.6 seconds left and Comets couldn’t convert on their final possession.

No. 5-ranked West Central stayed unbeaten at 11-0. The Trojans defeated three-time defending Sectional 50 champion Tri-County 51-40 Friday night in Francesville. The Comets dropped to 9-3.

Logan Mollenkopf led Caston with 24 points. Lane Hook scored 15. Gavin Mollenkopf added five, and Carson Harness and Brodie Howard chipped in three apiece.

The Comets trailed 21-14 after one before coming back to tie the game at 30-apiece at halftime. They took a 42-38 lead into the fourth.

Brady Bishop scored 18 points and Brendan Grindstaff scored 17 to lead West Central. Landon Hughes added eight.

“It was a great basketball game with a great atmosphere,” Caston coach Carl Davis said. “They came out red hot. I thought our guys did a great job of weathering that and making adjustments.

“West Central did a great job of taking care of the basketball and we had some costly turnovers throughout the game. The turnovers and offensive rebounds allowed hurt us. In a game that statistically we won the rebound battle, by percentage and number, it didn’t feel that way because there were too many second chance points for them. Too many 50/50 balls ended up in their hands.

“Our guys did some great things throughout the game, shot it well, finished well, and had some great rotations. It was a great game to be a part of to see where we are at in relation to another sectional opponent. Plenty to work on moving forward but love some of the things we saw Saturday night.”

Caston travels to Rochester on Tuesday night.
