PREP ROUNDUP: No. 7 Rochester tops Cass to win TRC outright

The Lewis Cass softball team had a chance to secure a tie for the TRC championship with a win at Rochester on Wednesday night.

But the Class 2A No. 7 Lady Zebras emerged with a 3-1 victory to win the title outright.

The Zebras (19-3, 9-0 TRC) completed a second straight perfect season in league play. The Kings (9-10, 7-2) finish alone in second place.

Junior right-hander Bria Rensberger held the Kings to one run (none earned) on two hits, striking out 12.

She outdueled Cass senior right-hander Amma Fitzhugh, who held the Zebras to three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk, striking out seven.

Ava Hubner had a single and run scored for Cass. Maddie Lynch added a hit.

Aubrey Wilson had a double and RBI for Rochester. Gabby Medina and Aubrey Miller each had a single and RBI. Brailyn Hunter added a single and two runs scored.

Rochester scored one run in the third, fifth and sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Cass answered with a run in the seventh before the rally fell short.

The teams could meet on the same field next week as they are on the opposite sides of the bracket of the Rochester Sectional. The Zebras drew a bye and will play the winner between Wabash (10-9) and Eastern (12-13) on Tuesday. The Kings drew Manchester (7-13) at 1 p.m. Monday. The winner will play Oak Hill (14-8) Tuesday. The final is Thursday.

PIONEER 11, ARGOS 0

Class 1A No. 14 Pioneer (13-10, 6-2 HNAC) secured a tie for second place in the HNAC with a five-inning win at Argos.

Victoria Bingaman pitched a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.

Lois Layer went 3-for-4 with a triple, two doubles and five RBIs to lead the offense. Bingaman had two hits and a run scored. Addison Kennell had a double and RBI. Madyson Shaffer, Ava Ott and Hallie Lebo each added a hit.

BASEBALL

BREMEN 13, PIONEER 4

Bremen (16-6) pulled away in the closing innings in a win over visiting Pioneer (5-16).

Lane Weldy allowed two unearned runs on two hits in four innings of work before the Pioneer bullpen struggled to get outs against the Lions.

It was a 2-2 game until Bremen put up a five-spot in the fifth. It was 7-4 when Bremen scored six more runs in the sixth to pull away.

Hunter Stover had two hits for the Panthers. Gabe Scott had a triple, RBI and run scored. Archie Blickenstaff and Tyler Erickson added a hit apiece.
