The Logansport girls golf team competed at the Western Invitational at Chippendale Golf Club on Saturday.
The Berries shot a 356 to place sixth out of 15 teams.
Chloe Wilburn led the Berries with an 81. She was followed by Izzy Lundy (85), Natalie Graham (88), Sam Baker (102) and Kendal Kranz (103).
Logan competes against Pioneer on Tuesday at Pond View Golf Course.
LOGAN 8, RENSSELAER 0
Logansport opened the season with a win over visiting Rensselaer on Saturday.
Senior Hodge Turner had four goals and two assists to lead the Berries. Junior Samuel Sebastian had two goals and an assist. Freshman Vilorche Merjuste scored his first varsity goal. Sophomore Wood Georges had a goal. Senior Guevary Jean-Baptiste dished out two assists.
The Berries led 4-0 at halftime.
“With 20 minutes left in the game the bench got to finish out the game. They dominated possession but couldn’t find the back of the net to finish off the game with the 9 goal rule,” Logan coach Mike Turner said. “It was an extremely hot day and I give credit to the Rensselaer players for fighting through not to give up that ninth goal.
“It was a great season opener.”
The Berries return to action at home Tuesday when they host Frankfort at 7 p.m.
WINAMAC COMPETES AT HOKUM KAREM
The Winamac cross country teams opened their 2025 campaign with an impressive showing at the Rochester Hokum Karem, highlighted by a boys team victory and a strong runner-up finish for the girls.
The unique relay-style race, run over a hilly one-mile loop in alternating fashion, provided the Warriors with an early test — and they delivered.
The boys race was headlined by Nate Pierzchalski and Logan Fredel, who became the first boys’ pair to cross the line in the 6x1 mile alternating relay. Their aggressive pacing gave Winamac the early edge and set the tone for the rest of the squad.
Joel Showley and Paxton Moon nearly edged Rochester’s top team, finishing just behind for a strong supporting score The combined efforts sealed the team victory for the Warriors, showing depth beyond the lead pairing.
The Lady Warriors also made their mark, finishing second overall to Rochester in a competitive field. Avery Wegner and Kandace Kroft led the Winamac girls with a strong finish. Maddy Goodman and Roni Garbison surged past both Miami duos, proving the team’s depth and resilience on the hills.
With the boys taking the top spot and the girls showing strength with a runner-up team finish, the Warriors demonstrated both talent and depth to start the season. The Rochester Hokum Karem gave Winamac the perfect springboard into 2025, showing they are ready to compete at a high level in the weeks ahead.
WINAMAC INVITE
Winamac hosted its fifth annual Winamac Varsity Volleyball Invitational on Saturday. Participating teams included Winamac, Tri-County, Tri-Township, Tri-Central, North Judson, North Newton, North White, Knox, West Central, Westville, Twin Lakes and Lake Station.
Winamac kicked off its season by winning their pool, beating Tri-Central 25-16, 25-23 and Lake Station 25-23, 25-12.
Bracket play continued after lunch with the Warriors falling to Tri-County in the first game of the gold bracket 25-15, 25-19. It was a hard fought battle led by Brooke Rausch with 15 kills and 12 aces. Grace Roth and Ava Malchow each contributed on the offense with five and six kills, respectively. Varsity newcomer Jaelyn Huddleston contributed 26 assists on the day. Jordyn Hounchell also added five aces to help lead the Warriors to a 2-1 record on the day.
The invitational concluded with a three-set match up between Twin Lakes and Tri-County with Twin Lakes ultimately taking home the hardware.
Winamac volleyball is on the road Tuesday at Lewis Cass.
