One Nashville sports icon has made a really fantastic commitment to ALS research in the name of another Nashville sports icon. See what Filip Forsberg is doing in honor of Chris Johnson and how you can get involved:
Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg has joined the renaissance of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, posting an Instagram video from vacation at the beach and announcing that his annual charity hockey clinic will donate all participant proceeds to the fight against ALS.
The move comes in the wake of Tennessee Titans legend Chris Johnson’s recent ALS diagnosis announcement, which has left the former All-Pro running back unable to move or speak.
Johnson sparked the challenge’s revival by nominating several former NFL teammates the week of his announcement, and participation has since spread across the NFL and into other professional sports. Forsberg’s involvement marks the challenge’s arrival in Nashville’s hockey community.
Forsberg’s message and commitment
In his Instagram video, Forsberg said, “Thanks Chris for nominating me for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Sadly, Titans legend Chris ‘CJ2K’ Johnson was recently diagnosed with ALS. To support CJ and all of the other people battling ALS, we would like to raise awareness by participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge.”
Forsberg hosts the Filip Forsberg Hockey Clinic each year, offering youth hockey players the opportunity to sharpen their skills alongside one of the city’s best. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Ford Ice Center in Bellevue. So anybody signing up can be proud of the fact that their clinic fee is going to a fantastic cause.
For one Nashville sports figure to redirect his annual charity platform toward the cause of another Nashville sports icon is a really cool gesture.. Using high-level platforms to raise awareness, and in turn raise funding, for such an oft-ignored issue receives a big thumbs up from me.
The bigger picture on ALS funding
I encourage everybody participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge to commit to both sides of it! Making the video and pouring ice on your head is the fun part, but the donation to ALS research and treatment has to come with it. A lot of Titans fans have been donating $28 for No. 28, Chris Johnson, which is a simple and accessible amount. If you have the means to give that much (or more), I recommend you do!
Here’s the thing about ALS: it is one of the most underfunded diseases relative to its impact on humanity in all of medicine. The gap between how devastating this disease is and how much research funding it receives is a real problem. Awareness remains the single biggest obstacle standing between where we are now, and a path toward better treatments. The original Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014 proved that social media virality can translate into real dollars for research, and I'm invested in making sure this revival does the same.
