Whether we like it or not, the rumor is that Gannon and Ossenfort will be back, but that big changes will come to the coaching staff. So let’s get some names out there.

I doubt that Gannon is willing to let Rallis go (Rallis seems sort of like Gannon’s project), but I think that both Petzing and Jeff Rodgers would be out. Now, my knowledge about special teams coordinators is very limited, so I have not focused on that.

The NFL is a league of relations and nepotism, so even though a new OC could be a complete out-of-the-blue hire, I will focus mostly on coaches that somehow can be connected to the current decision makers. I don’t think that completely namedropping-guesses makes much sense.

Now, as far as I know, a coaching staff is the head coach’s responsibility and selections, so I have included some coaches that Gannon have had relations with. However, if the order of changes comes from Bidwill, I would guess that Gannon will not have complete control of who to replace Petzing with. I am not saying that Bidwill will handpick a new OC, but I have included some coaches that Ossenfort has relations with.

Lastly, I am guessing that it would be an experienced OC. I doubt that Bidwill accepts another up-and-coming guy.

Let’s get to it:

In my column I have mentioned that I could see Gannon’s dream is to hire Kevin Stefanski, if he is let go by the Browns. They know each other back from their Vikings-days (where Gannon also knew Petzing from), and even though Stefanski was never a playcaller those years, he has been successful with it in Cleveland. I think he will get fired, but I also think he will get a new head coaching-job quickly.

Todd Downing was the OC in Tennessee while Ossenfort was there, and has previously been the offensive coordinator with the Raiders. For some years he was the Jets’ passing game coordinator, and even though that is not exactly a ringing endorsement, look at the material he has to work with. Now he is the wide receiver coach with the Patriots.

Gannon was with Pat Shurmur for many years in Minnesota. Shurmur has been a head coach with the Browns, Eagles and Giants, as well as the OC with the Rams, Eagles, Vikings and Broncos. Right now he is the offensive coordinator at Colorado (so, kind of the coach behind Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders).

In 2013-2016, Ossenfort worked with Brian Daboll in New England. Daboll later went on to be a successful OC at Alabama and with the Bills, before being hired as the head coach for the Giants. Previously he was the offensive coordinator with the Browns, Dolphins and Chiefs.

Scott Turner worked with Gannon in Minnesota where he was the QB coach for three years. Later he has been the offensive coordinator for Washington, Raiders, and this season he is a passing game coordinator with the Jets. Like with Downing, you have to look at the context when evaluating his time in New York.

Chad O’Shea worked together with Ossenfort for nine years in New England, where O’Shea was the WR coach. He later became the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins, and has been the WR coach and passing game coordinator for the Browns since 2020.

Marcus Brady has a relationship with Gannon from the Colts-days, and later joined Gannon for one year in Philly. Brady is now the passing game coordinator for Justin Herbert with the Chargers.

I'll throw this out there as a Jeff Rogers replacement on Special Teams. John Fassel. If JG is coming back, Monti should do whatever is necessary to get John from Tennessee. He's the son of Jim, who was once a successful OC in AZ, then did a pretty good job in NY. Also, he's coached under some pretty good coaches, been around the league his entire life and he's been an interim HC and has expressed his desire to get more HC interviews...IMO, this gives Monti and Michael the ability to move on from JG mid-season, if the Cards struggle out of the gate in 2026.

Not that you are asking my opinion... my preferenses are as follows:

1A. Kevin Stefanski (as you say, he will probablly get a HC position so he's not going to be an option)
1B. Brian Daboll (I've been saying Daboll since he was fired)
2. Pat Shurmur (good pedigree with teams he has worked with)
3. Marcus Brady (has experience as OC at Indy and previous QB coach experience)
4. Chad O'Shea (he's had multiple positions at multiple teams but only one year as OC
5. Scott Turner (OC career hasn't bee too successful but if we draft a QB, maybe a QB coach)
6. Todd Downing (not impressed with Tennessee, Jets, or Raiders teams he has been involved with)

Man, reading this I see, Browns, Jets, Raiders, Giants.
Coincidentally they are all drafting in the top 10.
So going to a familiar face makes sense. You can’t steal another teams OC to make him your OC unless he’s fired. And let’s face it, this isn’t the most desirable place to come to. After 3-14 and no Qb?

A word about Jeff Rodgers. Our special teams has been pretty good until this year. Injuries haven’t just affected the starting line up but it has devestated the personnel on special teams. He might be a real scapegoat here.

First you can’t really hire someone else’s OC unless they are not under contract any longer. There is a narrow possible exception, making them Assistant Head Coach. The NFL frowns on that and closely monitors it. Assuming major changes I’m thinking they need a coordinator with a history of QB development. That means Downing, Turner, O’Shea & Brady (who I believe worked with Brissett). These aren’t my favorites, but of your list, I like them best. They’ve all had some success helping QBs be better.

The rule is that a team cannot block a coach from getting a promotion with another team. Going from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator is considered a promotion.

I think the same, Slanidrac. I have actually thought a couple of times that he should have gotten a head coaching interview (he was on both Wilks' and Kingsbury's staff), and I could have seen him as an interim head coach if they had kicked Gannon out.

Agree but your list includes current OC.

It isnt who the Big Red wants it is who will work for Bidwill/Gannon. So forget the proven guys. Likely up and comer. I would like to see Stump Mitchell. A major limitation in filling the job is the person may only have the job for a year. Guys like Venable wanting his pound of flesh by firing OC didnt think ahead as to who was going to fill the role with a few games left. Clear to me Venable is a Murray homer with his recent whine about how hard the Big Red cant find a QB better than Murray in off season. Does he watch the games? Venable wants Gannon fired so to get his revenge for Murray. Sorry I drifted.

Cool. Which one of these guys wants a 1 year stint with a 1 year-contracted head coach and no viable QB on the roster?

If this was a job in my industry, I wouldn't take the job.
I would think guys like Stefanski or Daboll, knowing that they might be HC candidates in the next cycle anyway, might. But you are right I wouldn’t touch it if I were any of these guys

There are 32 of those jobs in the world.

I dunno man, neither of those guys were highly successful. Considering the crap show a guy like Daboll came from he might relish the idea of shedding the responsibility of being HC for a few years. Especially if he has a gentlemen's agreement that a promotion is in order if the current HC gets let go.

Not sure on Stefanski though. Flipping the script on the boss man role can often cause issues.

not to mention...they may be getting offset money for a couple years. Why be a HC if you are already getting paid like one?

And you get 1 shot at it. Do you really want it to be in a no-win situation?
guys that show poise and promise usually get a second chance. especially when their first shot was with the browns/jets/cardinals/raiders

Well, for all the six I mentioned it would be their third- or more shot.

And by far the most coaches never get any shot at all. If you get the chance, you take it.

I agree like a billion percent. I’m just saying if any of those candidates would be it would be them and for those reasons. Highly unlikely any change doesn’t come from within the current team. Like a wr coach promoted to OC type deal .

All they have to do is give the guy a raise. Albeit, they have to be willing to go “market,” but this is an easy day.

Since Bidwill doesn’t want to fire anyone and we accept mediocrity here..How about we hire Stefanksy as HC/OC. Demote Gannon to DC. Rallis to DL, Petzing to TE and keep special teams.

Boom. Experienced coaching staff now!

Plus just keep Murray!

Losers!
