May has been a rough month for Jaylen Brown. Between getting knocked out of the playoffs, missing out on All-NBA First Team honors, hearing his name in trade rumors and getting into a massive beef with Stephen A. Smith, it hasn't been a good offseason for Brown so far.

However, it's important to remember that Brown started all of this in the first place by calling this season his "favorite" of his career -- a weird thing to say for a guy who won a championship and NBA Finals MVP two years ago.

While much of the backlash to Brown's comments has been exaggerated and undeserved, he hasn't done himself any favors over the last few weeks.

"Jaylen Brown started this. Let's be clear: He started this. These are self-inflicted wounds by Jaylen Brown," Jason McInyre said on Tuesday's episode of "The Herd." "He's saying stuff a little out of pocket and getting himself in trouble... He's saying stuff that stirs up controversy, and then gets talked about in the media and then becomes a brushfire in the locker room."

Brown's comments could become more than a brushfire if he ends up getting traded this summer, perhaps for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Either way, he's already planted some serious doubts about whether he wants to be in Boston and if he's unhappy sharing the spotlight with Jayson Tatum, and that's on him. No one put those words in his mouth.
