Is Jaylen Brown unhappy with the Boston Celtics?
That's how some are interpreting his head-scratching "favorite year" comments after the Celtics were eliminated by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round. This season was the best of Brown's career with Jayson Tatum sidelined for most of it, but it was also one of his least successful from a team standpoint.
NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady, who's a close friend and mentor of Brown's, thinks there's some underlying tension between Brown and the organization.
"His frustration lies deeply in the organization and other things that we don’t have the details to," McGrady said on his "Cousins" podcast with Vince Carter. "There’s just been a lot of stuff that I’ve been hearing, just going on with the Boston organization with JB."
McGrady thinks Brown is a bit fed up with Boston, as he may not feel properly respected or appreciated by the organization. Despite leading the Celtics to a title and winning NBA Finals MVP two years ago, he's still being cast as the Robin to Tatum's Batman.
When Tatum missed most of this season with an Achilles injury, it was Brown who stepped up and carried Boston to the two seed in the East with an MVP-caliber season.
Brown still gets criticized a lot, however, and has taken a lot of heat since the Celtics' playoff collapse last week. That's probably not what he wants to hear and may be contributing to his growing sense of frustration.
