PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers returned home on Thursday with a chance to even this Round 1 series with the Boston Celtics in Game 6. After initially trailing this series 3-1, Philadelphia picked up a road win in Game 5 to set up this opportunity to keep its season alive back at home.
The Sixers trailed after one quarter, but then completely took the game over. They played a stifling defense as the Celtics couldn't find any type of rhythm out on the floor. In the end, the Sixers earned a 106-93 win to force a winner-take-all Game 7 back in Boston on Saturday.
Tyrese Maxey had 30 points and five assists for the Sixers while Paul George had 23 points, and Joel Embiid had 19 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Kelly Oubre Jr. was fantastic with 14 points and nine rebounds and VJ Edgecombe had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Here are the player grades following the win:
Maxey was aggressively hunting his shot early in this one as he put his head down and attacked the basket for Philadelphia. He also knocked down two 3-pointers off the dribble as he was able to find a rhythm on the offensive end. The Celtics had no answers for Maxey in this one as he made sure he and the Sixers were going to find a rhythm on offense. When he is able to get the ball into the paint, it makes things happen for everybody else on the floor whether it’s for himself or others. The way he was able to control this game from the point guard spot was impressive.
The rookie was unable to find the touch on his 3-point looks in this one, but he found a way to score the ball and be impactful in this one. He was tough on the defensive end, helpful on the glass, made plays with his passing, and put his head down and attacked the basket. He had some highly impressive dunks and was terrific on the glass as he gave the Sixers so many good moments in this one and was paramount to their success.
The 9-time All-Star deserves so much credit for his play in this one. He knocked down some tough 3s, was tough on the defensive end, and was just a calming presence for Philadelphia. Whenever it felt like the Sixers were in trouble, George stepped in and gave this team a big lift as he continues to be a guy they can rely on in big situations. He looked like the much younger version of George as he was knocking down stepback jumpers off the dribble and was playing some excellent defense on the perimeter. The shots he was making in the third quarter to keep Boston at bay were terrific looks.
Once again, Oubre did a little bit of everything in this one as he played some tough defense against the two Boston stars. He forced both Tatum and Brown into some tough looks and was active on that end of the floor by using his length and defensive acumen. He also found success at the rim on offense and knocked down a 3-ball. He was all over the place defensively and deserves a ton of credit for his work on both ends in this one.
The Sixers started the game by going inside to Embiid and he quickly scored two buckets before the Celtics started sending doubles. On the first double, Embiid was able to find Oubre for an easy slam, and the big fella generally made the right plays with the basketball all night in this one. He’s still struggling with the jump shot, but the big fella was good in this one on both ends. He disrupted anything the Celtics tried to run and drew a ton of fouls on Neemias Queta and Nikola Vucevic. He gave a little bit of everything for Philadelphia in this one.
The veteran big man provided a presence in the paint in this one. He was helpful on the glass, gave this team some much-needed size, and even finished in the paint. All the Sixers needed from him was to make sure Embiid got his rest and Drummond did that in this one. He had an impressive block in the third quarter and was an overall positive player in this one.
It was a tough start for Grimes in this one. He missed some makeable looks and had some defensive miscues as Boston hunted him at times. It ended up being a quiet game for him after such a big Game 5 on the road.
The second-year forward continues to give this team some much-needed defensive help on the perimeter. Edwards deserves so much credit for being able to battle against Boston’s star wings as such a young player in this series.
