The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday to continue their 6-game road trip looking to get back in the win column. The Sixers had a chance to get it done in Houston on Monday, but they let one slip away.
As they invaded the Paycom Center, both teams were missing some key pieces. The Sixers were, of course, missing a slew of players while the Thunder were missing MVP frontrunner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as well as Lu Dort and Jalen Williams. The end result was a 133-100 win for the Thunder as Philadelphia fell to 23-46 on the season.
Quentin Grimes led the Sixers with 28 points and five assists, Chuma Okeke had 14 and 15 rebounds off the bench, and Guerschon Yabusele added 11 points and four rebounds. Justin Edwards chipped in with 19 points while Alex Reese had 11.
Here are the player grades after the loss:
It was a tough night for Butler in terms of shooting the ball, but he did a good job on the defensive end. Oklahoma City has a lot of tough guards to defend even without Gilgeous-Alexander and Butler did a good job of bothering them out on the perimeter. He did a good job running the offense even though he had an off night with his shooting.
Once again, Grimes came out firing. It wasn’t the night he had in Houston, but Grimes gave the Thunder some problems with his ability to attack the paint and take guys off the dribble. He attracted a lot of defensive attention as he continues to be at the top of scouting reports as of late due to his offensive production. While he struggled at times against OKC, he had a good overall night as he once again was able to lift the Sixers on the offensive end despite the lack of 3-point success.
The rookie continues to attack the basket and show off his offensive ability. He started the night with an impressive slam over Thunder big man Chet Holmgren off a baseline drive and Edwards was then able to build off that with some smooth-looking jumpers. He just understands how to play the game and the Sixers have to like what he gave in this one.
It was a non-descript night for Brissett. He had a tough time against OKC’s big men and wasn’t able to make the same impact he was able to make on previous matchups on this trip. He was able to grab a handful of rebounds which helps.
Making his return after having to miss a game due to a bothersome right knee, Yabusele had some good moments in this one. He was able to knock down some triples and then take his man off the dribble and getting to the basket for an easy layup. There were defensive issues for him in this one, but that’s just mainly due to his lack of size in this instance.
The Sixers got off to a slow start so they turned to Okeke and he gave them a big offensive boost. He knocked down three triples in the first quarter as he threw in some much-needed hoops while also providing some help on the glass with Philadelphia at a serious size disadvantage. He deserves a lot of credit for producing in this one both with his scoring and rebounding.
Getting the backup point guard responsibilities in this one, Hood-Schifino had some good moments. He got the Sixers into some offense and he was aggressive looking for his shot. He had a tough time converting on those looks, but Hood-Schifino showed an ability to run things as a ball-handler.
There is a lot to like about Reese’s game. He was steady in this one as he hopped off the bench and did what the coaching staff asks of him which is to play hard on both ends while also knocking down shots on the perimeter. His ability to shoot the ball is something that can be valuable to teams in the future.
Moving back into a reserve role, Council tried to do a bit too much on the offensive end, but he deserves credit for being able to get into the paint. There were some times when he forced shots, but the Sixers would rather see him be aggressive rather than fade into the background. That’s the positive for him as Philadelphia looks to get him on a consistent level.
