The way Bryce Harper is swinging the bat right now, who wouldn’t want to see him in the Home Run Derby? The Philadelphia Phillies slugger owns a 1.180 OPS with five home runs over his last 15 games.
Not only that, but with All-Star Weekend taking place at Citizens Bank Park, Harper would have a ton of fan support behind him if he partook in the event.
Harper would not commit to participating in the derby earlier in the season when he was asked. The Phillies star said he would only do it if he were an All-Star, and also would keep his health in mind as well.
With just a few weeks before the All-Star Break, nothing has changed in terms of Harper’s mindset toward the Home Run Derby.
I'm still not sure,” Harper said on Thursday.
“I just, I want to be healthy, obviously. I'm gonna play every game in the first half; haven't done that for a long time. [The] last time I did it, I won. I said I'd never do it again. Um, so it, uh, I don't know. We'll see how I'm feeling.”

Harper also pointed out that he considered the competition a special event he and his father had shared, and He isn’t sure he wants to do it without him.
“I don't really have anybody to throw to me, as well,” Harper continued. “My dad hasn't thrown in a long time, so I don't really want to do it without him. It's a moment for me and him, but we'll see.”
Despite Harper giving multiple reasons as to why he wouldn’t want to do the derby, he didn’t completely shut down the idea, either. He realizes the Phillies fans want to see him compete in the Home Run Derby in front of them.
“Obviously, I know the fans want me to do it, so, you know, I'll take that into account. Um, but we'll see how much, uh, how much oomph, I guess I have behind, uh, you know, me going out there, um, and doing that.
At the end of the day, Harper continues to play at a high level for the rest of the season, and being healthy to do so is the more important thing for himself and the Phillies. He’s having one of his best seasons in years, and Philadelphia needs its star to continue to perform at a high level to get back to the postseason.
That said, it would be amazing to watch Harper compete for the home run crown in his home ballpark.
