Perhaps the most important baseball storyline of 2026 has nothing to do with what's happening on the field, but the labor negotiations between the players' union and owners at the current collective bargaining agreement are set to expire after the season.

Of course, the biggest topic in the discussion is the discrepancy in team payroll and how to fix it.

Philadelphia Phillies' Bryce recently opened up in an interview with ESPN about where he believes talks stand now, and the superstar actually does feel the players and owners have a similar goal at hand, it's just about getting there

"We're coming from two different areas, but we both have to understand our game is in a great position right now to succeed, and we can't lose that momentum," Harper told ESPN.

"We can't lose that momentum as players. We can't lose that momentum as owners. So wherever we're at -- whatever they're coming with, whatever we're coming with -- you have to come to an agreement before any of that happens because there's other things to do."

Yes, based on Harper's comments, it seems the players and owners both agree that neither side can afford to risk losing games heading into the 2027 season.

Baseball is in a great spot right now and continues to head in a positive direction, with attendance and popularity across the nation.

That said, the reason baseball is so popular might be where the two sides begin to disagree to an extent.

Harper pointed out in the interview that, "Our game is in a great direction, in a great place, because of the Los Angeles Dodgers." He cited the organization's ability to both sign high-end free agents and draft and develop talent from within the farm system.

The players and owners shared their first proposal last week, and it appears the two sides are far apart in finding a middle ground.

How long it takes to get everyone on the same page remains to be seen, but Harper made it clear he doesn't want to miss any time because of a potential lockout.

"I don't want to miss games. I don't think anybody wants to miss games. I'm getting later in my career, I don't want to miss games. I would love to get this done, on a personal level, just because I don't want to do that, but we'll see."
