Washington Sundar and Axar Patel rescue India as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggle in series opener

India captain Shubman Gill had plenty to smile about after his side edged past England by six wickets in the opening ODI at Edgbaston, though the win came with a clear message for two of the team's most senior batters, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, about the road ahead in the lead-up upto the 2027 World Cup.

While the overall result went India's way, both Rohit and Kohli struggled to make an impact with the bat. Rohit toiled his way to 11 off 21 balls before edging Sam Curran through to Harry Brook, and within the very next over, India lost Kohli.

The batting stalwart was making his first international appearance since sustaining a hamstring injury during the IPL 2026 final. However, he had a forgetful return to international cricket as he managed just six deliveries at the crease before Jofra Archer trapped him plumb in front with a full delivery, sending him back for a mere five runs.

Despite the early setbacks, India's innings had been sailing along smoothly on the back of Gill's fluent batting, with the opener looking well set for what would have been his tenth ODI century. However, his innings came to an unexpected halt when severe cramps forced him to retire hurt on 80.

That setback quickly snowballed into a genuine crisis, as Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, both looking well set, were dismissed within the same over, leaving India suddenly exposed.

With India reduced to 160 for 4, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel combined superbly to guide the innings home, forging an unbeaten 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Sundar finished unbeaten on 52, while Axar remained not out on 57, sealing a six-wicket win and handing India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gill reveals more experimentation ahead of 2027 World Cup

Gill made clear that India would continue experimenting with different player combinations as part of their preparation for next year's ODI World Cup in South Africa. This could be a warning call to the veterans that they might be sacrificed for fresher faces if runs do not flow from their bat consistently.

“Yes, we are really trying different combinations to see which kind of combination gives us the best depth in bowling and batting, in both departments," he said at the post-match press conference.

"I think the wicket that we played on, the conditions would be a bit similar to South Africa. It was not easy for the batsmen with the new ball. The ball was doing a bit, the ball was kicking off. It wasn't as easy to score runs with the new ball.

"But, the wicket settled in nicely, and I think the conditions are going to play similarly in South Africa as well. So if we can test different combinations on these kinds of wickets, it would be great for us."

Gill believes that India can chase down even larger totals and backs his batsmen to successfully knock down targets in the 300-320 range if required.

“We were put under pressure but how we bounced back was important. When you see your middle and lower middle-order score runs and finish the job, it gives confidence as a captain,” Gill said.

“We have a youngish bowling attack. Our batting is more experienced than our bowling. So, even if we had a target of 300-320, we back ourselves to chase that. But our bowling in the middle phase was good. We bowled the right areas, after they got away at the end of the power play."

India will now aim to seal the series when the two sides meet again in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on Thursday, July 16.

A timely wake-up call for Rohit and Kohli

Gill's talk of "trying different combinations" isn't just routine team-management language, but it's a pointed warning to two of India's most senior batters that comfort zones won't be guaranteed heading into a World Cup cycle.

Rohit and Kohli's struggles can't keep being brushed aside if India genuinely wants to build a settled, form-driven top order. What made this win particularly encouraging wasn't the star names, but the depth showcased by Sundar and Axar stepping up under pressure, exactly the kind of contribution India will need repeatedly on tougher overseas pitches.

If the seniors don't respond soon, Gill's comments may end up looking less like routine rotation talk and more like the first real signs of a transition already underway.
