Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro admitted he couldn’t let a chance to pitch LeBron James to join the Philadelphia 76ers go to waste.
James stunned many people in the world of basketball when he announced he was joining the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 season, a record-shattering 24th season for the 41-year-old.
James has come to Philadelphia to win a championship, and State Governor Josh Shapiro is ecstatic to have the legend in his state.

Shapiro appeared via phone on the Stephen A. Smith Show, where he revealed he had actually pitched James to join the 76ers a week ago when the pair bumped into each other at a dinner.
“When I saw LeBron James at a dinner about a week ago, I shot my shot. I told him how Philly would love to have him, he could win a championship here, and this would be a great place for him to bring his talents… I’m damn glad he chose Philly.”
“Thanks to Rich Paul for taking us seriously in Philly. Kudos to Josh Harris and the ownership team, and Mike Gansey and Bob Myers, who have been making moves this offseason… It’s going to be amazing.”
Having gubernatorial support before even joining the franchise is a fantastic sign, and it definitely made the 76ers an even more attractive destination.
Shapiro might not be thrilled to learn that James would prefer to stay in New York and travel to Philadelphia for his time with the 76ers.

However, he nor any of his constituents will be complaining if the state won its first NBA Championship in 43 years with LeBron on the roster.
This is the best shot the franchise has had at a title since the days of Allen Iverson, or the fleeting promise of the 2018-19 76ers.
But even the 18-19 76ers, who lost to the infamous Kawhi Leonard buzzer-beater in the second round, had JJ Redick commute between New York and Philadelphia.
With Redick spending the last two seasons as LeBron’s head coach and a year before that as podcast co-hosts, it’s clear James will make this viable for himself.
