A day after digging out of an early hole to secure a shootout victory against Notre Dame, Penn State was unable to come away with an extra point against the Irish on Saturday evening. Penn State lost to Notre Dame, 4-3, after Axel Kumlin scored the game-winning goal for the Irish in the first minute of the overtime session.
Penn State struck first in the game with a nice setup from Gavin McKenna to Casey Aman early on in the game, but the Irish tied things up late in the first period after Penn State failed to clear the puck out of the zone. The Irish then struck again in the final seconds of the first period with a power play goal to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Cade Christenson tied the game up for Penn State following a Notre Dame power play in the second period, but Penn State once again fell behind by a goal midway through the third period. Luke Misa scored an equalizer for Penn State off a shot from Mac Gadowsky late in the third period, which ultimately sent the game into overtime.
With one point secured, Penn State was unable to finish off another come-from-behind victory as Kumlin scored the game-winning goal for the Irish just 47 seconds into overtime.
Outside of a Friday night rout of Ohio State last week, the last three games have seen Penn State dig some holes. Penn State was able to come away celebrating a win in two of those games, last Saturday against Ohio State in overtime after trailing 3-0 and Friday night against Notre Dame with a shootout victory after digging a 3-1 deficit in the first period. On Saturday night, the luck ran out a bit against the Fighting Irish.
Penn State will wrap up the regular season at home next weekend with a couple of games against Wisconsin. Penn State is locked into the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Big Ten hockey tournament, so the results against the Badgers will, in the grand scheme of things, be meaningless in terms of the Big Ten race. But the Nittany Lions will hope to have a strong showing to close out the regular season to regain some momentum for the NCAA tournament selection process.
Penn State will then be home for the first round of the Big Ten hockey tournament, with an opponent to be determined. If the current standings hold, Penn State would host Minnesota in a single-elimination quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday, March 11.
