Following a weekend sweep of Ohio State on the ice, the Penn State men's hockey team has moved up one spot in the updated USCHO Division 1 Men's Poll this week. The Nittany Lions moved up from No. 6 to No. 5 this week, jumping ahead of Quinnipiac in the updated rankings.
Penn State enjoyed a highlight-filled weekend at home against Ohio State. Gavin McKenna had a record-night with eight points and seven assists in Penn State's 11-4 rout of the Buckeyes on Friday night. McKenna then capped a wild three-goal come-from-behind victory with a game-winning goal in overtime. The series sweep helped solidify Penn State's position in the upcoming Big Ten men's hockey tournament. The Nittany Lions are guaranteed a first-round series at home at the very least as they can not finish the season any lower than fourth in the final Big Ten standings. Penn State is on track for the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten tournament with two weekends still to play.
Quinnipiac split its recent two-game set with No. 11 Cornell with a 5-2 victory on Saturday following a 6-1 setback on Friday night. Cornell remains No. 11 in this week's USCHO poll.
Michigan State remains the nation's top team in the USCHO poll with 49 of 50 first-place votes. The Spartans remain one spot ahead of Michigan, the only other school to receive a first-place vote this week. North Dakota and Western Michigan are the two teams sitting between Michigan and Penn State.
The Big Ten is also represented in this week's USCHO poll by No. 12 Wisconsin, which moved up one spot this week. Penn State will close out the regular season with a pair of home games against the Badgers in two weeks, and the series could have important Big Ten seeding on the line.
Penn State will be on the road this weekend for a couple of games at Notre Dame. The Irish have struggled mightily this season, but Penn State knows it cannot take anyone lightly with the seedings for the Big Ten tournament not quite locked in, and a good spot in the NCAA tournament still within reach.
